Painted in 1888 during his stay in Arles, this work belongs to the series of flowering orchards that Vincent van Gogh created with remarkable intensity in the spring of that year.

For Van Gogh, these flowering trees were more than a subject.

In the autumn of 1889, while staying at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Vincent van Gogh painted this mulberry tree in a single day.

In the final weeks of his life, Van Gogh painted several young peasant women in the fields of Auvers.
In Young Peasant Woman with Straw Hat Sitting in the Wheat, the figure appears seated among the wheat, with a large yellow hat and blue ribbons.
In Girl in White, a young woman stands in a pale field, wearing a similar yellow hat.
Van Gogh described a peasant woman with “a big yellow hat” in a letter from July 1890. Was she the same model?
We do not know her name.
But she may have been one of the last human presences Van Gogh painted before his death.
