Ferienzeit ist Familienzeit – im August heißt das: freier Eintritt für Familien* im Lentos!

Von 1. bis 30. August warten mit „Max Pechstein. Abenteuer Expressionismus“ und „Spuren der Wirklichkeit“ gleich zwei Sonderausstellungen auf neugierige Besucher:innen.

Mit dem kostenlosen Rätselheft „Schau genau“, kreativen Mitmachstationen, einer Postkartenaktion und einem Gewinnspiel gibt es für Groß und Klein jede Menge zu entdecken. Und an heißen Sommertagen sorgt das Lentos als „Cooler Ort“ ganz nebenbei auch noch für eine angenehme Abkühlung.

*Familie ist für uns vielfältig: Eltern, Großeltern, Geschwister, Patchwork-, Herzens- und Wahlfamiien oder Freund:innen – willkommen sind alle, die gemeinsam mit Kindern das Museum erkunden möchten.

From 1 to 30 August, two special exhibitions await curious visitors: „Max Pechstein. An Adventure into Expressionism“ and „Traces of Reality“, celebrating 200 years of photography.

With creative hands-on stations, a postcard activity and a prize draw, there is plenty for visitors of all ages to discover. And on hot summer days, Lentos also offers a welcome escape from the heat as one of the city’s designated „Cool Places“.

*We believe family comes in many forms: parents, grandparents, siblings, patchwork, chosen and extended families, or friends – everyone is welcome to explore the museum together with children.

Ein Blick in die Ausstellung Max Pechstein. Abenteuer Expressionismus: Mit rund 150 Werken gibt die Retrospektive einen umfassenden Einblick in das Schaffen Max Pechsteins – einem der bedeutendsten Vertreter des deutschen Expressionismus und führenden Mitglied der Künstlergruppe Brücke. Die Retro­spek­ti­ve im Lentos ver­eint Schlüs­sel­wer­ke aus ver­schie­de­nen Schaf­fens­pha­sen. Neben Dres­den und Ber­lin bil­de­te die Ost­see­küs­te einen wich­ti­gen Arbeits- und Inspi­ra­ti­ons­ort.

Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung liegt auf Pechsteins Beziehung zu Wolfgang Gurlitt, dem Gründer der Vorgängerinstitution des Lentos Kunstmuseums Linz. Zahlreiche der gezeigten Arbeiten sind erstmals in Österreich zu sehen.

A glimpse into the exhibition Max Pechstein. An Adventure into Expressionism.

Featuring around 150 works, the retrospective offers a comprehensive insight into the oeuvre of Max Pechstein, one of the leading figures of German Expressionism and a prominent member of the artists‘ group Brücke. Bringing together key works from different periods of his career, the exhibition traces Pechstein’s artistic development. Alongside Dresden and Berlin, the Baltic coast emerges as one of his most important places of work and inspiration.

A special focus of the exhibition is Pechstein’s relationship with Wolfgang Gurlitt, founder of the predecessor institution of the Lentos Art Museum Linz. Many of the works on display are being shown in Austria for the first time.

Ab heute im Lentos zu sehen: Spuren der Wirklichkeit. 200 Jah­re Foto­gra­fie aus den Samm­lun­gen der Muse­en der Stadt Linz

Anlässlich des 200-jährigen Jubiläums der Fotografie versammelt die Ausstellung knapp 150 Exponate aus den Sammlungen der Museen der Stadt Linz und widmet sich den vielfältigen künstlerischen, technischen und materiellen Dimensionen des Mediums – von den frühen fotografischen Verfahren des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zu zeitgenössischen Arbeiten. Dabei treten Werke unterschiedlicher Zeitperioden in einen offenen Dialog.

Marking the 200th anniversary of photography, the exhibition brings together nearly 150 exhibits from the collections and explores the medium’s diverse artistic, technical and material dimensions – from the earliest photographic processes of the 19th century to contemporary works. Mit großer Trauer nehmen wir Abschied von VALIE EXPORT, die seit den späten 1960er-Jahren die internationale Medien-, Performance- und Filmkunst wie kaum eine andere geprägt hat. Mit radikalen und visionären Arbeiten hinterfragte sie gesellschaftliche Machtverhältnisse, Körperbilder und mediale Wahrnehmung und wurde zu einer der wichtigsten Stimmen feministischer Kunst.

Dem Lentos Kunstmuseum blieb VALIE EXPORT über Jahrzehnte hinweg eng verbunden. Ihre Werke waren in mehreren umfassenden Ausstellungen zu sehen, ihr Vorlass wurde 2015 von der Stadt Linz angekauft und bildet heute einen zentralen Bestandteil der Sammlung des Lentos sowie die Grundlage des VALIE EXPORT Center Linz.

Mit VALIE EXPORT verliert Linz eine außergewöhnliche Künstlerpersönlichkeit, deren Werk weit über Österreich hinauswirkt. Ihr Denken und ihre Kunst bleiben jedoch lebendig – in den Sammlungen, im Archiv, im öffentlichen Raum und in den internationalen Diskursen, die sie nachhaltig geprägt hat.

With great sadness, we bid farewell to VALIE EXPORT, who has shaped international media, performance, and film art like few others since the late 1960s. Through radical and visionary works, she challenged social power structures, representations of the body, and media perception, becoming one of the most important voices in feminist art.

VALIE EXPORT maintained a close connection with the Lentos over many decades. Her works were featured in several major exhibitions, and in 2015 the City of Linz acquired her pre-archive, which today forms a central part of the Lentos collection as well as the foundation of the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz.

With VALIE EXPORT, Linz loses an extraordinary artistic figure whose work resonates far beyond Austria. Yet her ideas and art remain alive — in collections, archives, public spaces, and in the international discourses she shaped so enduringly.

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

Die Ausstellung versammelt künstlerische Positionen, die sich zwischen Deep Time – Zeiträume von Milliarden Jahren, in denen das menschliche Dasein kaum mehr als ein flüchtiger Moment ist – und Cosmic Horror bewegen: einem Zustand zwischen Faszination und Beklemmung angesichts einer nichtmenschlichen Existenz, die unsere Vorstellungen von Zeit und Raum übersteigt.

The exhibition brings together artistic positions that move between Deep Time — timescales of billions of years in which human existence is little more than a fleeting moment — and Cosmic Horror: a state oscillating between fascination and unease in the face of a non-human existence that exceeds our understanding of time and space.

Mit der Eröffnung der Ausstellung zu Max Pechstein durften wir gemeinsam einen Auftakt feiern, der von großer Wertschätzung, Neugierde und Austausch geprägt war.

Es war eine große Freude, diesen besonderen Abend mit vielen Gästen zu teilen, darunter Angehörige der Familie Pechstein mit Freund:innen, F***y Stoye (Leiterin KUNSTSAMMLUNGEN ZWICKAU Max-Pechstein-Museum) sowie private Leihgeber:innen.

Diese unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und persönlichen Bezüge zu Max Pechstein haben spürbar gemacht, wie facettenreich sich sein Werk lesen lässt.

With the opening of the exhibition on Max Pechstein, we were delighted to celebrate a shared beginning shaped by deep appreciation, curiosity, and exchange.

It was a great pleasure to spend this special evening with our guests, including members of the Pechstein family and friends, F***y Stoye (Director of KUNSTSAMMLUNGEN ZWICKAU – Max Pechstein Museum), as well as private lenders.

These different perspectives and personal connections to Pechstein made it tangible just how multifaceted
his work can be read.
