What do we choose to keep — and what do our family archives tell about the place we live in?

People living in Salzburg are invited to open their personal archives and share photographs, home movies and documents connected to the city: everyday moments, transformations, events and memories that might tell another side of its social and cultural history.

Selected materials will become part of “The Politics of Intimacy – What We Keep, What We Share”, a public event at the Salzburg Kunstverein within Alberta Romano’s research project “Kinship and Archive: From Private Narratives to Public Discourse Through Amateur Archives” granted by DG Creatività Contemporanea MiC of the Italian Ministry of Culture - under the program (2025).

Alberta Romano is currently curator-and-researcher-in-residence at Salzburger Kunstverein.

Last day of Hac Vinent “unintelligible” 👀

“The supposedly complete, autonomous, and universally capable body has always been an exclusionary fiction. It is built around a normative subject whose modes of communication are treated as self-evident. Hard Persistence proposes embodiment as something produced through attachments and negotiations rather than possessed in advance. Vinent is deaf. Although the installation employs ambient sound, its sonic field is structured through low frequencies that they can perceive with their hearing prosthesis. Sound travels from different directions, moving between the three screens and refusing a stable point of origin. Hearing is therefore not presented as a ‘‘natural‘‘ and universal capacity, but as a technologically and spatially organised relation. “

Only three days left to see again

𝙾𝚗𝚎 𝙷𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚛𝚎𝚍 𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝚃𝚠𝚒𝚌𝚎

by Ryan Gander

“Classical logic tells us that everything must either be or not be. A body is here, or it is there. A statement is true, or it is false. Yet Gander’s practice has long been invested in precisely those situations in which such certainty begins to fail. His works often operate in the brief delay before meaning settles. They ask what happens when the thing refuses to be exhausted by one description.

In quantum theory, an object can technically exist in more than one state at once. Something similar happens in One Hundred Things Twice. A thing twice is not a copy. It may be an echo, a ghost, a front and a back, a left and a right, a beginning and an end. One thing happened; another almost did. One thing sits before you; another version of it begins to form in memory. The exhibition is thus less a collection of stable things than a field of relations between them.

…

There is no divine position from which everything is visible at once. And perhaps this is where Gander’s exhibition becomes unexpectedly egalitarian. If every thing contains the idea of another possible thing, if every world is accompanied by the world that could have happened, then no single reality can claim absolute authority over the others. “

Concurrently to the Annual Exhibition 2026, we present the work of Peter Schreiner, the winner of the 2025 Artist Development Award of Salzburger Kunstverein.

The more technology promises to make the world visible, measurable and knowable, the more insistently something seems to escape it. Cabinet fluidifié looks at the strange historical intimacy between technology and the spiritualist, and the strange fact that every apparatus we invent to make more of the world visible or knowable also leaves something outside its grasp.

The exhibition references two moments of radical technological change: the industrialisation of the nineteenth century and our contemporary age of artificial intelligence. In the nineteenth century, as science increasingly sought to measure, classify and explain the world, spiritists turned to the very same technologies to photograph ghosts, record invisible forces and even capture thoughts or the human soul. Today, machines again promise new ways of seeing and knowing, but AI not only records what is there: it reconfigures. Cabinet fluidifié connects these two moments to ask what happens to the invisible when technology attempts to capture it, and what continues to escape.

To capture is not an innocent verb. In the context of photography, once a phenomenon has entered an image, it can be stored, reproduced, compared, circulated, classified and owned. Photography has always promised preservation, but preservation is also a form of domestication. The ghost on the photographic plate has acquired dimensions, an inventory number, perhaps an AI-generated caption.

The 2026 members’ exhibition is guest-curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, who conceived a thematic showcase selected through an open call under the title HER.

Questioning the role of technology in shaping and defining our sense of self, as well as our relationships with others, HER frames the human as an imperfect, imaginary, sensory and embodied being: both an agent and an accomplice of power and its structures.

Spike Jonze’s tech drama Her (2013) depicts a romance between a man and his operating system. Set in the near future, Her captures Obama-era techno-optimism perhaps better than any other film. It is a time capsule, preserving dreams of progress that can now appear almost naive. Situated in a utopian near-future Los Angeles, an urban landscape untouched by wildfires, harsh immigration policies or economic crisis, the film was among the first to represent AI as an intimate, charming companion. Questions of how these technologies are made, for whom, and which biases they reproduce remain largely absent.
