Die Förderung zeitgenössischer Kunst mit ESTERHÁZY CONTEMPORARY ist die Weiterführung der bis ins 19.

Jahrhundert praktizierten mäzenatischen Tätigkeit der Esterházy. In diesem Sinne basiert ESTERHÁZY CONTEMPORARY auf vier Elementen,

- auf der Ausstellungsserie Central Europe Revisited,
- dem Esterházy Art Award Ungarn und
- auf zeitgenössischen Projekten, die auf die historischen Sammlungen der Fürsten Esterházy reflektieren.
- Die Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst aus Osteuropa ist im Aufbau.

Herbstgold Opening

As part of this year’s Herbstgold Festival, two works of art will be revealed which take up the festival’s theme, ‘Music – the Pulse of Time’, and bring to life the ideas of change, movement and cycles. To mark the grand opening, a walk accompanied by music will lead to both
artworks by the artists Hannah Neckel and Hugo Canoilas. The vocal ensemble Vocalis will be performing.

Visiting Burgenland and its vineyards this summer? Don’t miss our current exhibition 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘭 É𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦 at Esterházy Palace. Four prize-winning artists have transformed our historic state rooms with site-specific works that breathe new life into the palace’s eerie past.

Participating artists: EJTECH & Tamás Melkovics, Gábor Koós, Gábor Pap, and Dorottya Vékony.

Gábor Koós (*1986, Losoncz) first gained recognition for his large-format frottages and abstract woodcuts, but his most recent work marks a significant departure: three-dimensional sculptures produced through photogrammetry, 3D printing, and epoxy resin casting. These new pieces engage with themes of memory, fragmentation, and the unconscious.

For this exhibition, Koós has installed three sculptures in the former princesses’ bedroom. Each work is photogrammetrically assembled from architectural ornamentation and human body postures, layering historical material with contemporary process. Threaded through with digital system errors, the resulting forms reflect the multiplicity of identity and the accumulated strata of time — staging, within a charged historical interior, a dialogue that reaches across epochs.

Judit Kárpáti (b. 1989, Miskolc) and Esteban de la Torre (b. 1984, Mexico City) have worked together as the artist duo EJTECH since 2014. They occasionally collaborate with sculptor Tamás Melkovics (b. 1987, Székesfehérvár) on spatial installations that treat materials as living entities and generate new rituals through the interplay of technology and spirituality.

At Esterházy, their works create a connecting bridge from the foyer of the state rooms to the Grand Hall of Mirrors.
In the foyer, Tamás Melkovics has mounted a large animistic mask on one of the classical ceramic stoves, while also working with EJTECH on the central chandelier. In the Hall of Mirrors, the previous blue curtains have been replaced by orange-red ones. The windows look out onto a landscape that usually appears unchanged to us, but is in fact constantly shifting. EJTECH’s curtains aim to illuminate this multi-layered temporality. As the draped fabric unfolds differently each time under the influence of light, it simultaneously reflects the stories hidden within the surrounding architecture.

Dorottya Vékony (*1985, Debrecen) has been exploring issues of fertility and reproduction – in both humans and plants – for many years. Her spatial installations depict a future in which biological and social norms become blurred and human intervention radically alters nature.

Vékony’s backlit photographic print presents a collage of plant species imported from Asia to Europe, which have since become proactive and often controversial players in the local ecosystem. Displayed in the ‘Small Chinese Salon,’ this plant-based newcomer gazes defiantly at the castle’s visitors, for this foreign face is also a revenant of the garden scenes depicted on the surrounding 18th-century wallpaper.

Gábor Pap’s (*1991, Szentes) work explores the erosion of sensitivity, humanity’s destructiveness, and an “original sin” akin to Béla Tarr’s “cosmic filth.” His installation features a monumental Ouroboros snake made from clay sourced from his ruined family home, dried-up Körös River mud, and waste materials. The piece symbolizes his homeland, the devastated Hungarian Great Plain, where drought from climate change is worsened by battery factories’ water use and soil pollution.

Tamás Melkovics (b. 1987, Székesfehérvár) creates spatial installations that treat materials as living entities, generating new rituals through technology and spirituality.

His art begins in play—a free, childlike mode of thinking. Working with a contemplative, open-ended approach, he builds on traditional sculpture while keeping his tools experimental. Intuition and emotion guide the work. He aims to unlock static sculptural forms by creating signs, characters, and abstract shapes—rearranging and rebuilding compositions in dialogue with a changing physical world.

Christian Kosmas Mayer

For his 2025 Herbstgold flags, Christian Kosmas Mayer (*1976, lives and works in Vienna) draws on the cloud formations from Albrecht Christoph Dies’s painting The Leopoldine Temple with Pond. Dies envisioned the unfinished landscape park as a light-filled Arcadia of shepherds and poets. Mayer extracts the clouds above the mountains and transfers them to large-format flags, creating a dual sky: the printed cloud moves as real clouds drift by, and the painting’s distant sky reemerges before the palace façade.

First impressions from the opening of our new exhibition, Ghosts of the Bel Étage.
