As part of the group exhibition A Tragical Romance for curated_by, this conversation brings together artist Marianne Vlaschits, curator Mariana Lemos, and historian-theorist Lisa Moravec to explore the intersections of the body, the archive as concept, and the cosmos. Focusing on Vlaschits’ paintings Celestial Mechanics and Glitch Music 2.0, we will discuss how these works frame the body as an archive and the archive as a living body.
[This image shows a page from Theoricae Novae Planetarum, a work by the Austrian astronomer Georg Peuerbach from 1473. The page features a blend of text and illustration. At the top, we see a Latin heading: „Theoricae Novae Planetarum Georgii Purbachii Astronomi Celebratissimi de Sole,“ which indicates the section about the Sun’s theory. Below the title, the text is written in a block paragraph, with decorative details in the left corner.
At the centre of the page is a diagram, coloured in green, illustrating a geocentric model of the solar system. The two green concentric circles are labelled „C. deferens solem“ (Sun’s deferent) and „C. mundi“ (World’s centre), showing the deferent orbit and an epicycle of celestial mechanics according to medieval astronomy.
At the top margin, there is handwritten text, which likely notes an ownership or personal inscription. Similarly, there is more handwritten text at the bottom, which includes the name Regiomontanus, Peuerbach’s student and collaborator, referencing his involvement in editing and publishing this work.]
