The „Portrait of a Young Woman“ by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn recently traveled from to . This masterpiece from the Art Collections of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna will be on view in the new exhibition from tomorrow on:

Rembrandt 1632
Creation of a Brand
8.5. to 9.8.2026
Exhibition at Wilhelmshöhe Palace

About the exhibition:
Rembrandt is one of the most extensively researched artists of the 17th century. But some aspects of his work remain in the dark. The period around 1632 is characterized by stylistic and biographical changes: Rembrandt moved from Leiden to Amsterdam and joined the workshop of Hendrick Uylenburgh. A significant number of individual and group portraits were created here. New circles of buyers were tapped into. Rembrandt experimented with different stylistic devices, searching for suitable forms of expression.

The exhibition takes a focused look at the works from the year 1632 and explores the development towards variants and copies in order to examine various stylistic features, workshop techniques, and the function of individual paintings more closely.

Two rabbits are waiting for you in a most decorative still life painting, on view in our .

The artist, Nicola Malinconico captured all conceivable riches in this huge masterpiece: an exceedingly opulent arrangement of fruit, a bouquet of flowers, a magnificent silver plate. The watermelon glows out of the picture. In fact, what Neapolitan artists focused on in the end of the 17th century was colour. Malinconico evoked the sensual delights of this picture through the application of paint and the use of colour.

Come see this astonishing artwork from up close and discover all these details and also the shadowy living creatures. 🦚🐕🐇👧👦

To mark Easter, today we are highlighting a glimmer of hope amidst the otherwise very bleak and terrifying scenario of the Last Judgement Triptych by Hieronymus Bosch. In the top left-hand corner of the central panel, a golden glimmer of light reveals an opening into heavenly paradise.

On occasion of we are sharing ‘The Raising of the Cross’ by Alessandro Magnasco. The artist’s flickering brushwork infuses this well-known theme with a new, emotional quality, don’t you think?

Magnasco’s unique style arose from both the Genoese and Milanese local schools. He used wild, quivering brushstrokes that subjected all forms to a flickering rhythm and noted only the highlights. Magnasco and his studio produced many series of small-scale devotional images that must be envisaged in confessional boxes and pews. This small (56,5 x 36.5cm) Raising of the Cross belonged to one of these series and part of our current exhibition:

With deep regret we witness the passing of Alexander Kluge, one of the most erudite, spirited and inspiring minds of our time. His enormous knowledge and enthusiasm in connecting personages, times, historical circumstances and conditions with new technological means are unparalleled in their intellectual and sensible pervasion. We had the grand honor to work with him intensely in the exhibition „History Tales. Fact and Fiction in History Painting“ in 2023/2024.
Thank you for your dedication, vividness, generosity and kindness. You will be dearly missed.

Our deep-felt condolences go to Kluge’s wife Dagmar Steurer, the son Leonard Kluge and all those who worked and lived with him closely until his unexpected death.

Sibylline Collage. Possibilities of a Form

The lecture traces the written sources associated with the mythological figure of the Sibyl, the scrolls, tablets and books she holds in her hands, and examines how the newspapers, leaves and tapestries of Belgian artist Ana Torfs relate to these pictorial traditions. Taking Virgil’s Aeneid, in which Torfs visits the Sibyl of Cumae, as a starting point, the lecture will ask what it means to write prophecies on leaves, what fate these leaves have, what temporality they are subject to, and how newspaper pages, autumn leaves and personal notes connect in a work that uses the medium of textile collage to address present and future catastrophes.

Lecture in German

Juliane Vogel is Professor of Modern German Literature and General Literary Studies with a focus on the 18th century to the present at the University of Konstanz. Publications include: Aus dem Grund: Auftrittsprotokolle zwischen Racine und Nietzsche (Bild und Text), 2017. In April 2026, Nehmt Scheren! Ansichten eines Werkzeugs im Zeitalter der Collage will be published by Wallstein-Verlag / Konstanz University Press.

🌳 Today is

This annual awareness day on the 21st day of March was established by resolution of the United Nations in 2012. On this occasion, various events celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations.

Also many artists have been raising awareness for the beauty of nature and trees in particular. Among them is Jacob van Ruisdael. Head over to our Instagram stories and listen to the digital audio guide that will bring you close to this painting (available in English and German).

✍️ Did you know that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe dedicated an essay to this famous artist?

In his essay entitled “Ruisdael the Poet”, Goethe lauded the painter’s talent “…for depicting the past in the present….”
…and his way of “[…] bringing the dead and living into the most vivid connection …”

Come see this and many more paintings in our current exhibition!

Curator’s Tour coming up!

‘The Day You Were Thinking About the Sibyl While You Were Picking Autumn Leaves.’ An Insert by is currently on view at the .

On Tuesday, 24 March, Sabine Folie and Synne Genzmer will personally take you on a tour through this special exhibition.

🍁 28 Jacquard tapestries by Belgian artist Ana Torfs, arranged like a calendar month in four sections of seven days, are juxtaposed with historical works from the Art Collections of the Academy and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.

Collecting leaves during the Covid pandemic the artist remembered a passage she had read in Virgil’s ancient epic Aeneid. It tells of the Cumaean Sibyl writing her prophecies on leaves, which were scattered by the wind.

Torfs dried the autumn leaves between the pages of international ‘dailies’. In collaboration with TextielLab, the specialist workshop of the TextielMuseum Tilburg, these arrangements were finally woven into large-format tapestries, supplemented with personal anaphors, verse-like sayings. The texts and images form a fragmentary tableau on the state of our world as it is today. The lyrical fabric confers to the fleeting nature of quotidian life an alleged permanence through the medium of textiles, emphasising the nature of a historically memorable present whose repercussions on the future are unforeseeable.
