Rebecca Salter PRA is a British painter and printmaker and the current President of the Royal Academy of Arts in London—the first woman to hold the position in the institution’s history. Her practice has been profoundly shaped by the six years she spent living and working in Japan, where she studied traditional Japanese woodblock printing.

Paper occupies a central place in Salter’s work, not simply as a support but as a material in its own right. Working with ink, gouache and mixed media, she builds her compositions through delicate layers, repeated marks, punctures and subtle shifts between opacity and transparency. Pigment is often absorbed into the fibres of the paper rather than remaining on its surface, allowing image and material to become almost inseparable.

Characterised by restrained tonalities and an intricate dialogue between marked and unmarked space, Salter’s works hover between drawing, painting and printmaking. Their apparent simplicity reveals an exceptionally considered and tactile process: surfaces emerge gradually through repetition, layering and erasure, inviting a slower, more attentive way of looking. The influence of Japanese aesthetics is present not as quotation, but in her sensitivity to material, space, rhythm and the expressive potential of what is left untouched.

Inge Dick made her Naschmarkt drawings in the 1960s, during an early period of her artistic practice when she was living close to Vienna’s Naschmarkt. The market became part of her everyday surroundings, and she returned to it again and again as a subject. With only a few fine lines, she recorded people, market stalls and small moments of daily life. These drawings are especially interesting today because they show a less familiar side of Dick’s work, before photography and her long engagement with light, time and changing colour became central to her practice. Yet something important is already present here: her close attention to what happens around her and her ability to turn a passing moment into an image.
You can currently see a selection of these drawings in our Sommergalerie in Salzburg, as part of the group exhibition Women’s Line, on view until 29 August 2026.

For more than a decade, Erik Sturm has engaged with Stuttgart 21 not simply as one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects, but as an artistic investigation into the material, political and ecological transformation of the city. Working from an atelier located directly adjacent to the construction site, Sturm has spent years collecting, cataloguing and recontextualizing remnants of an urban landscape in transition.

Rather than treating Stuttgart 21 as an architectural spectacle, Sturm approaches it as a continuously unfolding archaeological excavation. Excavated concrete, worn drilling heads, tunnel excavation tools, steel fragments, dust and other traces of industrial labour become both his archive and his sculptural vocabulary. His practice, which he describes as a form of contemporary archaeology (Gegenwartsarchäologie), preserves everyday industrial residues as future historical evidence rather than allowing them to disappear beneath the completed city.

Removed from their original function, these objects become sculptural documents. Every worn surface, fracture and trace of use records the interaction between geology, technology and human labour, revealing the hidden processes behind the making of a city. What is typically discarded as construction waste is transformed into an archive of urban change.

In 2018, Sturm received an Award of Recognition at the STRABAG Artaward International .art acknowledging his distinctive artistic engagement with public space, material culture and the transformation of the urban environment.

The works presented here are original tunnel excavation tools collected from the Stuttgart 21 construction site. Preserved with minimal intervention, they retain their authentic materiality, inviting us to reconsider what is preserved, what is discarded, and how the making of a city can itself become the subject of sculpture.

CARLONE CONTEMPORARY: herman de vries

Dutch artist herman de vries has held to his credo that nature is art for over fifty years. A trained botanist and landscape gardener, he turned to art at an early age and gained recognition for his Art Informel paintings and as a member of the artist group nul. Ecological issues became a key theme in his art from the 1970s onward—to this day he is one of the most important exponents of Environmental Art. In his artistic research, de vries combines scientific methods such as observation, classification, and archiving with stories from mythology and philosophical questions. He collects all manner of objects on his daily explorations of nature in the Steigerwald forest in Germany and on his travels: flowers, stones, sticks, earth, bones, grasses, minerals, and more. These objets trouvés are arranged in sensory installations that reveal a simplicity with an intrinsic aesthetic power. His work is always guided by a deep understanding and respect for the earth’s natural resources. His Conceptual work 108 pounds of lavender flowers of 1991 comprises fragrant purple flowers arranged elliptically on the floor. This creates a sensory visitor experience beneath the Baroque ceiling fresco of the Carlone Hall.

King Rhomberg’s paintings combine autobiographical narratives with a playful visual language that oscillates between innocence and irony. Populated by recurring figures, fragmented landscapes, and references to everyday life, his canvases merge memories, imagination, and cultural influences from both Hong Kong and Vienna. While their vibrant colors and childlike imagery suggest spontaneity, the works subtly critique contemporary society through satire and self-deprecating humor. Balancing figuration with intuitive mark-making, Rhomberg’s paintings invite multiple readings, offering viewers a space where personal experience, identity, and collective memory intersect.

Daniel Sigloch – Cloud Series, 2018, 9x13 cm

Daniel Sigloch's Cloud Series explores the boundaries between photography, painting, and digital image-making. Rather than documenting a single moment in the sky, each work is meticulously composed from multiple visual sources. Depending on the image, these include the artist's own photographs, found imagery, and even screenshots from virtual environments and computer games. Through extensive digital layering, editing, and recomposition, Sigloch constructs atmospheric cloudscapes that never existed as such.

The resulting works are not representations of nature but carefully composed visual spaces in which reality, memory, and fiction merge. His process transforms digital technology into a painterly medium, creating images that recall the history of landscape painting while remaining unmistakably contemporary.

Mary Alacoque Waters
is a contemporary Irish painter who was born in London in 1957. She currently lives and works in Utrecht and Galway. In 1981, she graduated from the National College of Art and Design in Limerick. She is known for her portraits inspired by famous masters in Western Europe.
Waters is particularly influenced by the realistic and naturalistic portraits of Dutch artists of the Golden Age. Her monochrome or colorful figures usually set against a strong or geometric background. She has exhibited at numerous art fairs and galleries in the Netherlands and abroad, including Galerie Vous Etes Ici, Amsterdam (2014), Art Rotterdam, Galerie Vous Etes Ici (2014), Art Miami, Galerie Piece Unique, Paris (2010, 2011), 2012, 2013), Art Dubai, Galerie Piece Unique, Paris (2012), Art Brussels, Galerie Transit Mechelen Be (2006), Art Rotterdam, Galerie Arti Capelli (2005), Singer Museum Laren, Solo (1997).
