🔥 Don’t miss: Markus Redl’s exhibition 𝘌𝘹𝘪𝘵_𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦_𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 is on view until 28 May 🔥

In sociology, a safe space is understood as an inclusive environment — that is, a sanctuary or protected social space for people who, as members of a group, share experiences of discrimination.

The combination of “Safe Space” with the word “Exit” is particularly interesting as an exhibition title because it leads to an irresolvable uncertainty. “Exit” is, in itself, a multifaceted word. It means to go out; to bring something to an end; to leave a situation; or even the chance to turn one’s misfortune around and get to safety; it can also refer to the transition from life to death. The exhibition title 𝘌𝘹𝘪𝘵_𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦_𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 requires an interpretation which, whatever the outcome, offers no certainty, because it cannot be clarified beyond doubt whether one is moving out of a safe space or into a safe space.

On view here are works from the 𝘖𝘸𝘭-𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦, 𝘌𝘹𝘪𝘵_𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦_𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦-𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦 and the sculpture 𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘢.

👋 Come visit us at Art Brussels until Sunday, 26 April!
📍 Booth 5B-46

We are showing a solo presentation by Hubert Schmalix with works from his beginnings in the 1980s to his later years in the sector ‘68 Forward.

With his expressive, gestural style and his figurative and abstract works, Hubert Schmalix was one of the leading figures of the ‘Young Wild Ones’ movement. Over time, and following his move to the Philippines and later to Los Angeles, where he lived from 1987 onwards, his style evolved towards a contemplative, reduced form vocabulary. The atmosphere in his paintings became lighter, more expansive and defined by the light of the colours. The landscapes he began painting in the mid-2010s are neither American nor Austrian, but rather idealised representations featuring recurring motifs such as mountains, waterfalls, rocks and trees. In later years, figures and self-portraits reappeared more frequently in his work, also reflecting personal developments.

Abstraction, figuration, still life and landscape were central themes in Hubert Schmalix’s work. By bringing together works from different periods, the presentation offers an insight into his oeuvre and shows why Hubert Schmalix is one of Austria’s most significant painters.

Final days of Manfred Wakolbinger‘s solo show Tears in Rain… on view until 14 March 🔥

Since 2000 Wakolbinger has been exploring underwater photography. During so-called blackwater dives in the open ocean, he observes the living organisms that ascend to the surface during the night to feed on plankton. The photos of these mysterious organisms, that can take on various shapes, surrounded by darkness and some specks of glowing plankton, are reminiscent of distant galaxies.

“I have seen things you humans would never believe. Gigantic ships burning, out off the shoulder of Orion. And I have seen C-beams, glittering in the dark, near the Tannhäuser Gate. All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.”
