LAST CHANCE to see JÖRG SASSE’s solo exhibition ‘Red Doors’ open until this Saturday 29 AUG 2026 at Domgasse 6 in Vienna.

Sasse’s pictorial spaces explore the power of the visual. His compositions consisting of pictorial blocks create a formally reduced, almost perfect reality that nonetheless always entails small elements that confound us. These breaks in particular destabilize our perception, allowing the constant reflection on visual structures to become palpable, perhaps tying this into current debates. Many artists have only recently begun to address issues relating to artificial intelligence, while the key questions in Sasse’s art seem as if he had already anticipated the current situation. The represented objects appear both familiar and strange, near and inaccessible. This impression is additionally reinforced by compositional rigor, abstracted surfaces, and hypnotic colors, letting the photographs oscillate between documentation and construction, between photography and painting.

If you’re spending your summer days at Lake Chiemsee, make sure to see Sheila Hicks’ work ‘Saffron Sentinel’, part of the group exhibition ‘Könnt ihr noch? – Kunst und Demokratie’ at the Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee, presented by the Pinakothek der Moderne. On view until 18 October 2026.

The exhibition’s title quotes the German techno-rap group Deichkind, calling on us to uphold the values of democracy even in times of growing social tensions.
Against this backdrop, more than 50 key works from the Modern Art Collection are presented in the historic unfinished interiors of Herrenchiemsee Palace. Ten chapters explore the importance of creative self-expression, the fundamental values enshrined in our constitution, and the possibilities for social participation.

Check out LEE JIYEN’s work as part of the group exhibition ‘Adoring Harmony’ at the Seoul Botanic Park in Seoul, Republic of Korea until 16 MAY 2027.

Lee Jiyen translates imperceptible micro-world structures into the human sensory realm by creating sculptural installations that merge physical phenomena of light with the latest scientific breakthroughs. Her works, created using nanoimprint lithography, incessantly shift into new colors and forms in response to the installation space’s lighting and the viewer’s orientation and movements, sensorially revealing that the universe does not exist in a fixed reality, and is, instead, in a state of continued transformation caused by countless relationships and conditions. Stain-Rainbow Forest, a series representative of her ongoing research, consists of light-and-sculpture installations in which she takes the semiconductor nanostructures etched on silicon wafers, hand-replicates them onto new sheets of film, and expands them using carbon rods, silicone rings, and 3D printing. A metaphor for her worldview — a “world of relationships” where imperfect beings coexist via their links with each other — the series has evolved through continuing collaboration with scientific institutions, including the KIMM (Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials), KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), and the Anti-Counterfeiting Research Center at KOMSCO (Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation).

MIAO YING’s solo exhibition ‘Come, Sit, Stay’ at the Belvedere 21 in Vienna is currently on view until 4 OCT 2026.

In her first solo exhibition in Europe, Chinese artist Miao Ying draws an unexpected analogy between artificial intelligence and the animal kingdom. Few technological innovations have the potential to transform society as profoundly as AI. Miao Ying’s remarkable artistic practice engages with the collective sense of wonder and disbelief surrounding this transformation, illuminating the technical foundations of artificial intelligence while exploring the deeply human desire to control this emerging technology.
Following artistic training in China and the United States, Miao Ying has developed a critical, often ironic body of work at the intersection of technology, ideology, and digital visual culture. Through installations, videos, and paintings, she examines the mechanisms of digital surveillance, state control, and media manipulation.
Come, Sit, Stay—the title of her solo exhibition at Belvedere 21, borrowed from common dog-training commands—highlights Miao Ying’s deliberate parallel between dog training and the human training of artificial intelligence. Clearly defined commands govern learning and control in both cases, shaping the behavior of dogs as well as AI systems.

Where does this staircase lead? Does the threshold actually bring us to the next room, or only the idea of another room? What is hidden behind this thing that could be a curtain, a surface that opens and encloses at the same time? Transitory situations not only mark boundaries; they also create intermediate states. They describe a before and after, a here and there, a moment of transit in which certainties become unstable. At the same time, they are places of visibility, culmination points where something appears, comes to the fore, or can be perceived in the first place. It is precisely these intermediate stages that question the conditions of seeing per se. – Felix Hoffmann

BERNARD FRIZE’s solo exhibition at the MARe / Museum of Recent Art in Bucharest is currently on view until 16 AUG 2026.

It is the artist’s first Eastern European retrospective with over 40 large-scale works created between 1980 and 2024. His art is less about the subjective vision and signature of the artist and more about the logic of the process itself. By following simple gestures and rigid rules, Frize creates a visual universe where control and abandonment meet, challenging traditional ideas about how a painting should be made.
