Join the performance I MITMACHEN!

On Saturday, June 20 at 4:00 PM, the MuseumsQuartier Vienna invites you to the participatory art performance “Auf den Sockel gehoben” by artist KARIN SANDER in the MQ Main Courtyard.
At the heart of the project is the MQ community: visitors, MQ fans, long-time companions, as well as family and friends—everyone who has a special connection to MQ and would like to become part of a collective artwork is warmly invited to participate.
Participants will step onto a 20 cm-high pedestal and, as a token of appreciation, will receive a photograph signed by Karin Sander. The performance will be documented through photography.

In collaboration with Galerie Bärbel Grässlin we present the work 'Untitled' (2019) by HERBERT BRANDL.
While large-scale works appear repeatedly throughout his practice, such monumental works with such an expansive, spatial presence remain rare. At the same time, this painting brings together key elements of his practice into an intense pictorial language: the painting process is fast, intuitive, and free of premeditated intent. Following the principle of all-over, gestural applications of paint cover the entire surface of the canvas. Luminous fields of colour—created solely through broad brushstrokes—structure the pictorial space, shifting from deep dark blue to orange, intense red, and vivid yellow. The work suggests an extension of colour and gesture into space—a painterly state in which condensation and dissolution remain in constant tension. In the movement of paint, which mirrors that of the body, and in the atmospheric openness of the pictorial space, the painterly energy that has defined Brandl’s oeuvre over decades becomes visible.

Where does this staircase lead? Does the threshold actually bring us to the next room, or only the idea of another room? What is hidden behind this thing that could be a curtain, a surface that opens and encloses at the same time? Transitory situations not only mark boundaries; they also create intermediate states. They describe a before and after, a here and there, a moment of transit in which certainties become unstable. At the same time, they are places of visibility, culmination points where something appears, comes to the fore, or can be perceived in the first place. It is precisely these intermediate stages that question the conditions of seeing per se.

Katharina Grosse has sometimes described her work as exploring the possibility of “ painting without painting,” but in fact, her approach is more one of expansion than negation: from the paintbrush as extension of the artist’s hand to the industrial sprayer, and from the bounded surface of the canvas into three dimensional space. Grosse’s works do not so much respond to a particular context as change it, transforming architectures and objects into spaces of painting in a way that is appropriative in its most basic sense of physical seizure or occupation – a strategy that carries unavoidable critical connotations in how the artist engages with the institutions that host her work. For her third edition for TEXTE ZUR KUNST and on the occasion of the magazine’s 35th anniversary, Grosse has taken a similarly interventionist approach, using back issues as substrates for 35 unique and characteristically colorful and vivid paintings. Splayed open before being painted, these objects can no longer be used in their original function without threatening the stability of the paint on their surfaces. This raises the question of how they should be “read”: As a wry comment on the mutual dependency between art and criticism? As micro-acts of institutional critique that engage with TZK’s role within the art economy? Or simply as surfaces, whose relationship to the content they conceal is incidental? They thus stand as fitting symbols of the artist’s own position: informed by and embedded within arguments around expanded painting, while at the same time standing apart on their own enigmatic terms.

KATHARINA GROSSE’s solo exhibition ‘Arrels‘ with the Esbaluard Museu at La Llotja de Palma in Mallorca is now on view until 31 JAN 2027.

Grosse makes no distinction between painting, sculpture and architecture or between inside and out, surface and volume, wall and floor, viewer and participant. All is painting. In “Arrels,” the artist is creating a model of a landscape within a historic structure that she cannot touch.
Grosse’s intervention marks a particularly significant moment in her career, as it directly engages with the historical and symbolic dimension of the site in an unprecedented way. Unlike previous interventions in which architecture functioned as a surface, here the site also becomes the subject: the work responds to its history as one of Palma’s most emblematic heritage spaces, its original function as a vital space of exchange, and its open and permeable condition. In the artist’s own words, it is one of the clearest examples to date of integration between installation and architecture.

“Showing the same thing in a way that it is always different” is something that Caramelle said in 1979. It means that everything is already present but can always be seen and interpreted in a new fashion. In his current exhibition “das gleiche, aber anders” (the same, but different), which is also his tenth solo show in the gallery, the artist follows the same principles. Here, Caramelle opens up several levels of new spaces that not only extend beyond conventions, but also challenge our expectations in sophisticated ways. He thus establishes a connection to a poetic idea iterated by Oswald Oberhuber, who was his teacher at the art academy: “Art is the internal entrance to the unknown.”
