Suppan

Suppan Contemporary & Modern Art Gallery SUPPAN, founded in 1974, is a Vienna-based contemporary art gallery presenting a selection of contemporary and modern artists.

The focus of the gallery program is on Austrian and German contemporary artists, including Hermann Nitsch, Hildegard Joos, Markus Huemer, Michael Ornauer, Florentina Pakosta, Dénesh Ghyczy, and on numerous international modern and post-war artists, such as Herbert Bayer, Rudolf Ray, Auguste Herbin, Victor Vasarely, Hugo Puck Dachinger, Wolfgang Paalen, Lucio Fontana, Arnulf Rainer, Sigmar Polke an

d Günther Uecker. In addition to solo exhibitions and major retrospectives, the gallery organizes curated thematic group shows, aiming to establish a dialogue between contemporary artists and selected historical artists from the 20th century, sometimes with artists also outside their exhibition programme. Since 1974, the gallery has organized over 200 exhibitions, presenting their gallery programme within their various on-site gallery premises as well as off-site, with exhibition projects at the Belvedere 21 Museum, Vienna; Albertina Museum, Vienna; Künstlerhaus, Vienna; Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest; Austrian Cultural Forum, New York; Austrian Cultural Forum, London and more. With SUPPAN EDITION, the gallery runs its own in-house publisher, where over 50 publications, including catalogue raisonnés, artist monographs and art historically complied books, have been published. After a long history of organizing art historically relevant exhibitions, publishing books and being represented at national and international art fairs, such as Art Cologne and Vienna Contemporary and more, the gallery managed to build trust and a strong network with curators, collectors, museums and artists to help realize important museum exhibitions as well as to take a curatorial and advisory function for corporate and private art collections.

YEAR IN REVIEW | Looking Back on 2025 💥

As we look back on 2025, we’re pleased to reflect on a year of growth and success!
Over the past months, we focused on strengthening our international presence by participating in several art fairs, including Art Brussels in Brussels, Future Fair in New York and Enter Art Fair in Copenhagen. We also remained closely connected to the Austrian art scene, taking part in national art fairs such as Spark, Vienna Contemporary and with a special presentation at Art & Antique .
Additionally, we presented a number of exhibitions at our gallery locations and were delighted to welcome new artists to our program, including Linda Berger and Aljoscha.
Finally, we explored new formats and projects, including a collaboration with ROW INC. Studios, for which we curated an exhibition, as well as a joint participation at an art fair, in cooperation with another gallery.

Thank you for being part of our journey in 2025—we look forward to what comes next!

We invite you to take a look at our 2025 Year in Review.

“Art is a wonderful instrument to break something open.” Ornauer’s handling of the surface—diving deeper into something in order ultimately to break through it, opening it to a new perception—symbolizes his mindset. “If I don’t have the ambition to go beyond, then no development happens.” Ornauer’s approach to his work is intuitive. For him, painting is a meditative introspection that ultimately manifests as gestural spontaneity on the canvas, created without reference to anything in the real world. Through the act of creating art, shifting consciousness toward something new is, in Ornauer’s view, both his personal mission and his societal contribution—and he encapsulates this in his oeuvre: “Form is content. Content is form.”
