Christine König Galerie was founded in 1989 in Vienna. In the last decades art has become a dominant field of action and discourse.

The gallery represents a variety of internationally recognized artists and works simultaneously with a decidedly younger generation of upcoming artists. The gallery's program and its selection of the artists reflects the central concerns of Christine König: Politics and activism, feminism, literature, as well as post-conceptual approaches. Visual arts can help develop an understanding for socio-po

litical and cultural processes of change. In a highly stimulating and productive climate, galleries have assumed the role of intermediaries, making a preliminary selection and using their intellectual resources in a responsible way to back and promote certain positions and artists vis-à-vis collectors. An important focus of the gallery is entering into a dialogue with the public and engaging in art discourse: Until 2006 artists, curators, architects and philosophers talked about their work in weekly Lunch Lectures, since 2008 this tradition has been continued in the CONVERSATION series, taking place in irregular intervals. Together with three other galleries, Christine König changed its location to Schleifmühlgasse in 1999. Along with Eschenbachgasse and Seilerstätte, Schleifmühlgasse has become one of the central sites for contemporary art in Vienna. The gallery is located in the immediate vicinity of the Secession, Kunsthalle Karlsplatz, Wien Museum, Museumsquartier and Naschmarkt. KOENIG2 by_robbygreif opened in 2017 as the Christine König Galerie's project space just around the corner of the main space. It focuses on young and experimental positions. KOENIG2 follows the criterion of only inviting artists who have never before exhibited in Vienna or to whom it would like to provide a special platform to create a site-specific installation for its nearly cubical room. Ever since its founding, the gallery has participated in the leading international art fairs (e.g. ARCOmadrid, artgenève, Artissima, artmonte-carlo, Art Basel, art berlin, Art Brussels, ART COLOGNE, Art Dubai, Art Rotterdam, Code Art Fair, cosmoscow, Independent Brussels, PARALLEL VIENNA, SPARK Art Fair Vienna, The Armory Show, viennacontemporary). Artists of the gallery are regularly featured in exhibitions such as documenta, Manifesta or the Biennials in Venice, Berlin or Moscow. The gallery has placed works in the collections of the most important Austrian museums (mumok, Albertina, Belvedere, Wien Museum or Museum der Moderne Salzburg), the collections of prestigious international institutions (such as MoMA, Tate Modern, Reina Sofia, Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet), as well as in numerous private collections all over the world.

Radenko MILAK’s Neighbors explores everyday encounters and the quiet relationships between people sharing the same spaces. Based on real photographs, his black-and-white watercolors depict anonymous figures and moments of observation and interaction. By translating photographic images into painting, MILAK reflects on the relationship between image, memory, and perception, and on the tension between familiarity and anonymity.

Radenko MILAK’s watercolours establish a connection to the collective unconscious by referring to decisive events of the early 21st century. In numerous black-and-white watercolours, some of which are composed of many individual sheets assembled into huge pictures, the artist, born in Travnik, Bosnia, in 1980, depicts key motifs of world history, painted in watercolours after iconic photographs of current and past political and social events. By switching from one medium (photography) to another (watercolour), MILAK captures and displays the growing tension of instability and uncertainty in the world, while always maintaining a neutral standpoint.

(Paris), Haus der Kunst München. He was participant at the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024.

In 2017 Radenko MILAK represented the Bosnia and Herzegovina Pavillion at the 57th Venice Biennale with his multidisciplinary project University of Disaster. He also took part in the Kochi Muziris Biennale in Kerala, the Kampala Art Biennale and the 4th International Canakkale Biennale.

100 Years Nancy SPERO ❣️💐🤍

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of American artist Nancy SPERO (1926–2009) on August 24, and the Jüdisches Museum Wien together with Christine König Galerie, which has represented the artist since 1992, are commemorating one of the 20th century’s most significant feminist and politically engaged artists. Her artistic legacy - also embodied in the murals she created for Ronacher and the Jewish Museum in 1993 and 1995/96 - continues to connect these institutions and highlights SPEROs enduring presence, also in Vienna.

Nancy SPERO is regarded as one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. From the 1960s onward, she developed a resolutely feminist and political body of work that confronted violence, oppression, and patriarchal traditions of representation. She was also actively involved in the feminist art movements of the 1970s and made a lasting contribution to the development of politically engaged contemporary art.

Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at major institutions, including the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebæk), Museum Folkwang (Essen), MoMA (New York), Museo Tamayo (Mexico City), Serpentine Gallery (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Museum der Moderne (Salzburg), Frac Haute-Normandie, Vancouver Art Gallery, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, MIT List Visual Arts Center (Massachusetts), Malmö Konsthall, National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Museum Villa Stuck (Munich), and Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid). She also participated in the Sydney, Venice, Whitney, Gwangju, and São Paulo Biennales. In 1996, Nancy Spero was awarded the prestigious Hiroshima Art Prize.

Permanent murals by Nancy SPERO can be found, among other locations, at the Lincoln Center subway station in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles, Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden, and Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.

wort für wort – totale rezitation der allgemeinen erklärung der menschenrechte

Ein Projekt von Gerhard Rühm

Eröffnung der Klangintervention im öffentlichen Raum

Für Menschlichkeit und die Freiheit der Grundrechte erhoben mehr als tausend Menschen am 22. Februar 2025 vor dem Portal des Volkstheater ihre Stimme: Einer Idee Gerhard Rühms, Legende der österreichischen Nachkriegsavantgarde, folgend, wurde einzeln und nacheinander – Wort für Wort – die „Allgemeine Erklärung der Menschenrechte“ gelesen. Die 1.355 gesprochenen Worte der Deklaration wurden bei der mehrstündigen Aktion über zwei große Lautsprecher in den Stadtraum getragen – und parallel aufgezeichnet.

KÖR Wien freut sich, dass die daraus entstandene rund halbstündige Acht-Kanal-Installation nun auf den Wiener Heldenplatz einem großen Publikum präsentiert werden kann und bis zum 30. August täglich von 10 bis 20 Uhr im Loop zu hören sein wird. Wort für Wort erinnert sie uns daran, dass Demokratie und Menschenrechte das Fundament unseres Zusammenlebens bilden.

Für Gerhard Rühm gehört die „Allgemeine Erklärung der Menschenrechte“ an die Spitze aller schriftlichen Manifeste. Sie beschreibt zum ersten Mal Rechte, die für jede und jeden, jederzeit und überall auf dieser Welt gelten (sollten). Angesichts des gegenwärtig äußerst beunruhigenden politischen Geschehens ist die Besinnung auf unsere demokratischen Werte wohl höchst angebracht, erläuterte Rühm 2025 in einem Interview aus Anlass seines 95. Geburtstages die Motivation für die Realisierung dieser Idee.

Das vom Kunstverein Wien initiierte Kunstprojekt, das Rühm hinsichtlich seiner Machbarkeit als utopisch eingestuft hatte, konnte 2025 gemeinsam mit dem Volkstheater umgesetzt werden. Als Klangintervention – mitermöglicht von KÖR Wien – wird es nun im öffentlichen Raum präsentiert.

Plum cake will be served while supplies last, baked by Bildungszentrum des Handels. Afterwards, Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, together with Maruša Sagadin, invites to famous “Blue Bar” in the Kunsthalle foyer for a Blue Curaçao Spritz and a visit to the two exhibitions by Ragnar Kjartansson and Ayaka Terajima. The Kunsthalle is open until 10 p.m.

Sagadin’s new sculpture not only formally depicts a widely recognized fruit, but—through its color scheme alone—explores questions of surface and the underlying semiotic interplay: Is it a plum, or is it a mouth turned blue by the cold? Through her multi-layered application of paint, the gradual sanding away of layers of varnish, and the resulting emergence of what came before, Sagadin is also an archaeologist of colors and forms.
Many of us have encountered combinations of bodies and fruits in art from Greek antiquity to the present day—whether in parks and gardens or in churches and museums. Or consider the visual language of Pop Art and advertising, where bodies and fruits often appear in bright, bold colors, extending to the more recent iconography of emojis. Thanks to Sagadin, a pair of “Blue Lips” next to the Kunsthalle now condenses all these themes into a plum visible from afar, and yet it fits so naturally into the space—it seems as though it has always been there.

im Rahmen von Wunder Stoff/Wunder Punkt – Orte des Gedenkens Lungau 2026

📍Mittwoch, 15. Juli 2026, 19 Uhr, Schloss Kuenburg in Tamsweg

Das zentrale Motiv für die zwei großformatigen Wandbilder in Mariapfarr und in Tamsweg bilden Messgewänder: In den Wandbildern sehen wir ausschnitthaft zwei dieser kostbaren Stoffe, aber sie sind durchsetzt mit Rissen und ausfransenden Löchern. Das Zerreissen der Kleidung ist sowohl im Alten Testament als auch im Neuen ein Zeichen der Trauer. Hier verweisen die Risse und Löcher auch auf die Gewaltherrschaft des NS-Regimes und auf das jahrzehntelange Stillschweigen darüber.

(…) Naruto (2026) by examines photographic intentionality in the age of algorithmic image production. Its starting point is the famous “monkey selfie” of a crested macaque from 2011, a precedent in debates surrounding the copyright of AI-generated images. Since animals are not granted personality rights, any claim to licensing is invalid. In the form of a photographic exposure strip that begins too bright and ends too dark, the image increasingly detaches itself from its human origin. Photography appears as a result of technological and legal structures that generate value and meaning in the first place. (…)
