SALON FÜR KUNSTBUCH AT BETWEEN BOOKS, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf Art Book Fair 11–13 September 2026. Following three editions in 2023, 2024 and 2025, Between Books returns to Kunsthalle Düsseldorf for three days, bringing together 90 exhibitors and a programme of around 30 workshops, talks and lectures. Independent art book publishers, artists, publishing and DIY collectives, organisations, zines and magazines present current approaches to artists’ books and independent publishing.
Between Books functions both as a platform for discovering publications and as a meeting point for discussions around artists’ books, alternative forms of publication and publishing as an artistic practice. The accompanying programme includes book presentations, talks, lectures, performances and workshops.
Salon für Kunstbuch, initiated by Bernhard Cella in Vienna in 2007, operates as a publisher, archive and platform for artists’ books, with a particular focus on their conception, production and distribution and on publishing as an artistic practice. Salon für Kunstbuch is officially listed among the participating exhibitors for the 2026 edition.

CURRENT OBSESSION #6 This issue is about jewellery. While the jewellery robbery at the MAK in Vienna has nothing to do with this magazine, it does provide a remarkable footnote to the subject. The museum director commented on the incident: “My security concept worked.”
The issue of Current Obsession explores jewellery through the idea of the cult: as a unifying signifier, a secret message, and a catalyst for personal mythologies and rituals. Photography is combined with fictional stories, moving between jewellery, imagined realities and forms of belonging. Among the contributions are Kellie Riggs’ curatorial text “Us Against the World and Jewellery in Between” and work by Nicolas Cheng.
Current Obsession is an independent magazine and curatorial platform based in Amsterdam. It examines contemporary jewellery and adornment within a broader cultural context, linking them to art, fashion, photography, design and visual culture.

From the Archive · No. 24212. PATRIK PION , LA PERTE DU BONHEUR
(THE LOSS OF HAPPINESS) La perte du bonheur (The Loss of Happiness) brings together sculptures, photographs, drawings, and video works by Patrik Pion. At its centre are the “objets blancs” he has been developing since the 1990s: replicas of everyday objects made from unprinted, natural-coloured newsprint.

Pion reconstructs these objects from memory. Through their altered proportions and their reduction to paper, they lose their original function and appear as mental images in which personal memories and collective representations overlap.

The title The Loss of Happiness addresses the social conception of happiness as a goal, an obligation, and a measure of individual achievement. François Piron’s essay “Expériences sur le peu de réalité / Experiments in the Paucity of Reality” examines Pion’s work in relation to psychoanalysis, sociology, and the question of how reality is constructed through perception and memory. The publication appeared on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the Centre d’art contemporain – la Synagogue de Delme. Patrik Pion

FROM THE ARCHIVE – MOVING IMAGES Nr. 9401 Mauricio Guillén — I for Idiot - I for Idiot was conceived as an extension of Mauricio Guillén’s 16mm film Avenida Progreso and published on the occasion of his exhibition of the same name at MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, Zollamt, in 2012.
The artist’s book brings together perspectives from philosophy, ethnology and film theory alongside materials and layers of reality that informed the making of the film. At its core is an investigation into dialectical time as a means of disrupting linear narratives and examining the relationship between history, speed and the distribution of knowledge.
The film moves through different areas of Mexico City along Avenida Progreso. Guillén examines how knowledge is produced, transmitted and socially distributed, and how cultural codes shaped by historical and colonial structures continue to operate in the present.

When does a photograph cease to be part of one story and become material for another?
Is history inherent in the images—or does it only emerge through the order we impose on them?

Publishing Bernhard Cella, SECOND ORDER, Artist’s book. 100 copies Black-and-white photographs mounted on individual cards Published by Salon für Kunstbuch, Format: 28 × 21,5 cm, 24 pages, Vienna 2010. Historical photographs do not simply show the past. They show a past that has already been observed, selected and framed.
Removed from their original context, these black-and-white photographs no longer belong to a particular family, place or history. Rearranged in the form of a historical photo album, they enter into new relationships with one another.
What emerges is not a reconstruction of the past, but a new context produced in the present — through the way we look at what has already been seen.

A book about books—and at the same time a portrait of an art scene.
Collecting Books brings together artists’ books, exhibition catalogues, and independent publications from Austria, not as a bibliography but as a curated constellation.
Collecting becomes a method of thinking: each publication retains its own identity while acquiring new meaning through its proximity to others.
Originally conceived for the New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1, the project documents a moment in which the book itself became an exhibition space—a medium through which artistic production, publishing, and distribution could be read as a collective practice.Published by Salon für Kunstbuch, Vienna 2012
