SPIRALBINDUNG / An exhibition at S.F.K.B. Archive / curated by Bernhard Cella as part of Independent Space Index 2026, as part of Independent Space Index 2026, 29–31 May 2026, open 12:00–19:00, S.F.K.B. Archive, Luftbadgasse 16, 1060 Vienna, SPIRALBINDUNG presents artist books and publications in which spiral binding is not only a technical solution, but part of the artistic and structural concept. The exhibition looks at the spiral as a visible element of construction: it allows pages to lie flat, opens the book into space, and makes the sequence of sheets, folds, images, and transitions directly accessible.
As part of Independent Space Index 2026, the exhibition brings together publications from the archive of Salon für Kunstbuch and reflects on binding as a material, aesthetic, and conceptual decision within artists’ publishing.

Spiralbindung is one of the most unassuming choices in book production. In art, however, this simple form of binding becomes an aesthetic and structural device: pages lie flat, sequences remain flexible, and the connection between the sheets stays visible. The exhibition Spiralbindung takes place at the Salon für Kunstbuch Archive, Luftbadgasse 16, 1060 Wien. It takes place from the 29th to the 31st of May 2026, from 12:00 to 19:00. Spiralbindung presents publications in which binding is not merely a means of production, but an integral part of the book’s form, use, and perception.
This exhibition is organized in the context of the Independent Space Index 2026.

S.F.K.B. - Rare Book - No Martyr: San Francisco Punk Posters 1976–1981 (Sylvie Astié, Hendrik Hegray) order at https://www.sfkb.at/books/no-martyr-san-francisco-punk-posters-1976-1981/
is a comprehensive visual anthology capturing the raw energy and DIY spirit of the Bay Area punk scene during its formative years.
Curated by Sylvie Astié and Hendrik Hegray, this 116-page softcover volume was published in conjunction with the 2016 exhibition at Galerie P38 in Paris. The collection showcases a wide array of punk posters from 1976 to 1981, reflecting the vibrant and rebellious culture of San Francisco’s underground music scene. These posters, often produced using Xerox machines and characterized by their bold graphics and provocative imagery, were instrumental in promoting bands and events at iconic venues like Mabuhay Gardens and the Deaf Club.
Measuring 29.5 x 37 cm and weighing 510 grams, the book offers a substantial and immersive experience into the visual language of punk. It not only serves as a historical record but also highlights the enduring influence of punk aesthetics on contemporary art and design.

S.F.K.B. Archive : Nimbus der Kappe is an artist’s press publication by Friederike Mayröcker and Olaf Nicolai, published by burgart-presse in 1993. The work combines a text by Mayröcker, written specifically for this edition, with lithographs, blind embossings, die-cuts, and fold-outs by Olaf Nicolai. As an artist’s book, it is intended not only for reading, but also for viewing and for experiencing the book as a physical object. Its distinctive design opens up, as the publisher puts it, “unusual possibilities for reading and viewing.”

The Quarry /Adam Dickinson / Lorène Bourgeois. Order at sfkb.at (€20.-)Adam Dickinson’s poetry operates at the intersection of poetic language, scientific thought, and ecological reflection. His work explores how poetry can function as a form of knowledge—not merely as an expression of subjective experience, but as a method for making material, biological, and environmental connections perceptible in new ways. His publications include Cartography and Walking (2002), Kingdom, Phylum (2006), The Polymers (2013), and Anatomic (2018). Lorène Bourgeois’s recent works are characterized by large-scale depictions of bodies, animals, clothing, and nudity. Her visual worlds emerge from a complex network of sources: public archives, museum artifacts, and direct encounters with the visible world. In her works, observation, cultural memory, and graphic precision combine to form an exploration of physicality, presence, and representation.
