Am 14. Juli durften wir auch heuer wieder OeAD-Lektor:innen im Rahmen des Zertifikatsprogramms „Auslandslektorat. Weiterqualifizierung für Universitätslektor:innen“ am VWI begrüßen. Ines Koeltzsch, Sandra B. Weiss und Marianne Windsperger leiteten den Workshop mit dem Motto „Wessen Holocaust? Wessen Gedenken? Die Wiener Gedächtnislandschaft im Fokus“. Nach einer Walking Tour zu zentralen Wiener Denkmälern und Monumenten, die sich dem Holocaust und dem Zweiten Weltkrieg widmen, wurde das Wissen um diese Orte durch die Arbeit mit Archivmaterial, Presseberichten und Austausch zu aktuellen Debatten eingeordnet und diskutiert.
Wir danken allen Beteiligten für den Austausch, die angeregte Diskussionen und freuen uns schon jetzt auf das nächste Jahr!

Secret Notes from Austrian Resistance Members in Gestapo Captivity

Elfriede Hartmann was only 21 when she was arrested by the Gestapo in Vienna in 1942 for her work in the Communist Youth League. During her imprisonment, awaiting trial and ex*****on, she wrote clandestine messages, known as 'Kassiber', to her family – hidden inside food parcels, sewn into the hems of her clothes. Barnabas Balint explores her life and the significance of Kassiber as historical sources.

Last week, two of our Conny Kristel Fellows as part of EHRI-ERIC presented and discussed their research projects at the Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust Studien - VWI in the framework of our regular fellow seminar: Kathryn Sederberg is an Associate Professor of German Studies at Kalamazoo College (Kalamazoo, Michigan). Her research areas include twentieth-century German literature, life writing with a focus on diaries, war and gender, and National Socialism and its legacies.

During her Conny Kristel Fellowship at the VWI, she will continue work on her book project, "Writing Home: Emigration Diaries of German and Austrian Jews, 1933-1945". With a focus on the experience of German and Austrian Jewish refugees, this project analyses the role of the diary as a site (space, practice) where the writing subject is shaped by processes of acculturation and explores new concepts of self, home, and belonging.

Filip Gańczak holds a PhD in political science. He works at the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) in Warsaw and serves as an editor of the Institute of National Remembrance Review. He is the recipient of the Witold Pilecki International Book Award (2021). The VWI was his first research stop, his Conny Kristel Fellowship will further take him to the Zentrum für Holocaust-Studien at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History in Munich and the Fritz Bauer Institut in Frankfurt. Currently, he is conducting research on Horst Schumann for a biography of the German physician involved in the Aktion T4 programme, Operation 14f13, and X-ray sterilisation experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The VWI is one of the host institutions for the EHRI-ERIC Conny Kristel Fellowship Programme 2026.

BEYOND WORDS: From Testimony to Visual Storytelling in Holocaust Education

[en] Last week, during the week dedicated to commemorating the Iași Pogrom, the “Elie Wiesel” Institute launched a new project focused on Holocaust education, which brings the history of Romanian Jews persecuted through pogroms or deportations to Transnistria to the attention of the European public .

BEYOND WORDS is implemented by the Institutul National pentru Studierea Holocaustului din Romania Elie Wiesel, Еврейская Община Молдовы / Comunitatea Evreiască din Republica Moldova, Palatul Culturii din Iași - Complexul Muzeal Național „Moldova" and Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust Studien - VWI in Romania, Moldova and Austria and is funded by the European Commission through the CERV-2025-CITIZENS-REM-HOLOCAUSTJEW programme.

The project encourages dialogue among teachers, experts in education and gender studies, journalists, and professionals in the visual arts regarding the needs, challenges, and opportunities in Holocaust education, and aims to develop a set of tools to facilitate Holocaust education: an educational guide and a series of animated films.

The project was launched on Tuesday, 23 June, in Chișinău; on Thursday, 25 June, in Bucharest; and on Friday, 26 June, in Vienna.

BEYOND WORDS wird in Rumänien, Moldawien und Österreich vom Institutul National pentru Studierea Holocaustului din Romania Elie Wiesel, Еврейская Община Молдовы / Comunitatea Evreiască din Republica Moldova, Palatul Culturii din Iași - Complexul Muzeal Național „Moldova" und dem Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust Studien - VWI implmentiert und wird von der Europäischen Kommission im Rahmen des Programms CERV-2025-CITIZENS-REM-HOLOCAUSTJEW finanziert.

Das Projekt fördert den Dialog zwischen Lehrkräften, Expert*innen aus den Bereichen Pädagogik und Gender Studies, Journalist*innen sowie Fachleuten aus der bildenden Kunst über die Bedürfnisse, Herausforderungen und Chancen der Holocaust-Bildung und zielt darauf ab, eine Reihe von Hilfsmitteln zur Förderung der Holocaust-Bildung zu entwickeln: einen pädagogischen Leitfaden und eine Reihe von Animationsfilmen.
