Focus On:
Crystin Moritz & Karl Karner

Galerie Kandlhofer is pleased to present at the Focus On an exhibition by artists Crystin Moritz and Karl Karner.

At the center of the Focus On Section stands Karl Karner’s the cow eat not the honey grows - a sculpture that grows, resonates, and tells stories: of bees and trees, of wounds and healing, of beings suspended between nature and imagination. As part of the FEED series, this work demonstrates how closely material, process, and interaction are interwoven in Karl Karner’s practice.

Karner’s installation steps into dialogue with Crystin Moritz new work series LINEA, about which the artists states:

„LINEA emerged during a period spent in Sicily, engaging with the island’s history, mythology, and sagas, particularly those centered on women. Combining AI-generated images and videos, the series moves between historical narratives and contemporary perspectives on identity, ritual, and gender. References to traditions such as the Minne di Sant’Agata—small Sicilian pastries referencing the cut-off breasts of Saint Agatha after her martyrdom—point to the ways violence and collective memory become embedded within everyday rituals. Natural forces and symbolic imagery appear throughout the work, connecting Sicily’s layered past with present realities. The series reflects on how inherited social structures and motifs continue to shape society today.“ - Crystin Moritz

Marc Henry - the early works
one hundred selected works

Marc Henry – the early works, a catalogue bringing together 100 selected paintings created between 2021 and 2025, offering the first comprehensive overview of the artist’s formative body of work. For this catalogue, a selected
group of international writers and contributors was invited to each respond to a single artwork with a short original text. The result is a kaleidoscopic collection of critical reflections and
personal readings that mirrors the diversity and intensity of Henry’s practice.

The publication is edited and designed by Italian publishing house Malelingue Edizioni and will be released in a limited edition of 500 copies. The volume features a linen clothbound
hardcover with a screen-printed cover.

A public presentation of the catalogue will take place on tomorrow, May 9, 2026, at CZ95 on Giudecca in Venice, followed by an afterparty with DJ sets.

Karl Karner | WASSERSPIELE

Karl Karner’s exhibition, WASSERSPIELE (water feature), marks a significant and timely development in his practice, bringing into focus his longstanding engagement with ecology, materiality, and the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Rooted in his sustained research on environmental precarity, particularly the urgent need for water and the impact of human activity on land, this exhibition emphasizes the pressing situation of
what is truly at stake with water and asks what we are willing to do for it?

Karner’s connection to these concerns is not merely conceptual but comes directly from his lived experience. Since his twenties, he has been actively engaged in re-naturalization projects, including the Tümpel-Projekt, an initiative in which all proceeds from his work supported the acquisition of protected land for the Nature Conservation Association Styria. This direct involvement grounds his artistic approach, positioning his work as both a reflection on and an extension of ecological responsibility.

Coming Up
Focus On: Crystin Moritz & Karl Karner

Crystin Moritz (*1987 in Magdeburg, Germany) is a Vienna-based visual artist working across photography, video, and artificial intelligence. After studying photography in Berlin, she lived in London, assisting Axel Hoedt while refining her practice.

Her work focuses on Al-generated and hybrid image-making, where analogue aesthetics collide with digital processes. Through exhibitions and collaborations in Austria and internationally, Moritz constructs precise, unsettling image systems that operate on a disturbing meta-level, collapsing boundaries between reality and simulation. Her work addresses underlying fears and destabilizes fixed ideas of identity and gender.

Théo Viardin | Orphaned

This is the last week to see Théo Viardin’s exhibition Orphaned, as well as So Young Park’s Gestated Leak at the Focus On.

The ensemble presented by Théo Viardin in Orphaned is a strange one — biblical, profane, furiously anachronistic. Though we already knew of the young French painter’s penchant for projecting his catastrophic visions and the worried masses of his alien morphologies into the realm of contemporary figuration, it is no longer in the future, but in the compulsive remembrance that the present maintains of its own pictorial memory, that the tension of his latest canvases lies. - text ecxerpt by Axel Fried
