Onkaparinga Arts - Sauerbier House Sauerbier House is a heritage arts venue featuring galleries, artist studios and gardens.

We offer creative exchange through contemporary visual arts through our artist in residence program, exhibitions, open studios, workshops, and arts focused events. Sauerbier House is an innovative artspace providing a platform to support cultural exchange through contemporary visual arts. Sauerbier House offers established and emerging contemporary artists and writers, site responsive residency (n

on-resident) and independent exhibition opportunities. The extended residencies provide a platform for arts practitioners to creatively respond to a complex and culturally significant coastal location. Interactions with other residents, locals and visitors are offered through regular open-studio sessions, artist’s talks, gallery tours and workshops.

ZINC

Zinc by Rosina Possingham and Brianna Speight is the outcome of a collaborative residency at Sauerbier House from 2 January to 28 March 2020. These works were created on Kaurna land, at the Port Noarlunga Jetty, and Sauerbier House with assistance from friends and community members. During this time, Rosina and Brianna developed two series of photographs; Below, created underwater and Above at Sauerbier House. These works respond to site by paying close attention to notions of protection and play at the beach. Both Below and Above draw on materials and objects associated with safety and recreation; photographically re-imagining throwaway beach paraphernalia, warning labels and unpredictable nature within a playful scene of hi-visibility materials. Being underwater and moving in an unfamiliar environment the body is challenged. In Below bodies are suspended in the deep wearing suits covered in warning labels. The surface reflects what’s lying below and in a disorientating haze the viewer is led into a new atmosphere. BIRDS THAT SANG (TO ME)

Bevan's art works combine simple devices, a poetic approach and materials often recycled from the domestic realm of her own private individual history.
Her aim is principally to cultivate and expand the relationship between art and an ecological sensibility.
This approach extends into the present, the practices of many important 20th century artists working in this expanded field. Bevan is also receptive to the haiku poetry of artist Kyoshi Takahama, Anni Albers' compositions and Tom Phillip's painterly word plays.
This exhibition signifies a point of departure from Bevan's previous academic work where a more rigid and experimental strategy for making was adopted.
At Sauerbier House the collages and assemblages are more traditionally formatted to suit the hanging devices provided. The artist intends that the works could be read as patterns of dialogue that build to form a larger picture to instigate further conversation in relation to the Anthropocene.

VISUALLY SPEAKING

Bryant created small collage paintings, exploring ways of seeing through reinvention and transformation. In re-contextualising the works of other great artists, Bryant sought to present new narratives and generate an alternative visual language.

‘My intention is to create paintings that remain ambiguous, offering an opportunity for reflection and interpretation from the viewer. Like many artists, I have an impulse to make images and a compulsion to paint and draw; I am aware of the historical tradition I work in, and often include a reference of painting my own history into my work’.

Bryant was born in the United Kingdom and migrated to Australia in 1971. He graduated the University of South Australia with a degree in Fine Arts and has been professionally engaged as an artist since 1990 with an increasing list of group and solo exhibitions.

Sauerbier House proudly exhibited a survey of Michael's works in 2019, following his passing in 2024. We would like to acknowledge and retrospectively thank him for his contribution to the arts community and to our program.

THE INBETWEEN

Whilst in residence, Kim’s practice will be based on Mono-ha and Dansaekhwa. These two art movements placed importance on the spatial concept created by things or mediums in line with the concept of phenomenology. Kim aims to explore and represent the spatial nature created by the property of materials found in everyday life during the residency in Sauerbier House.

Join our wonderful current Artists in Residence Jorji Gardener Jorji Gardener and Margaret Ambridge Margaret Ambridge Art this coming Saturday 29 August between 1:00-4:00pm. They’ll have their studio doors open, so pop in to see what they’ve been up to during their time in the house.

Jorji is in residence in the Sunroom Studio and has been out and about visiting local sites around Sauerbier House. During her residency Jorji will continue to explore local birds and their song stories as well as mapping ecological relationships and connections to habitat.

Margaret is working in the Riverside Studio and is investigating the human condition in our fragile relationship to the natural, built and personal environments. During this residency, Margaret’s sensitive and powerful drawings explore the impact of the encroachment of suburbia on the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park.

Tracing the history of coastal passages to and from Port Noarlunga including the role jetties have played in the transportation of people and produce.

Unmoored memories will be a site specific project researching and responding to local narratives of place, including coastal weather patterns, to give rise to exploratory art works that seek to reflect how memory, place and history collide with the present in mutable and affective ways.

Sauerbier House Festivals Exhibition Program.
Applications close Wednesday 2 September 2026, 11.59pm (ACST)

Sauerbier House is currently accepting applications for the upcoming 2027-28 festivals exhibition program. Local or visiting contemporary artists, artist groups or curators can apply to exhibit at Sauerbier House in one or more of three very distinct gallery spaces.
Exhibitions will take place at Sauerbier House between May 2027 and June 2028.
