Gilbertโs potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) holds the title for Australiaโs most endangered and the rarest marsupial in the world โ and itโs not had an easy time since it was first described in the 19th century.
Thought to be extinct until 1994, when a small population was discovered 35 km from Albany, the Gilbertโs potoroo has overcome incredible odds. A rogue lightning strike later ignited a bushfire that burned 90% of its habitat, yet the species continues to claw its way back from extinction thanks to key recovery efforts led by the WA Government.
And who wouldn't want to protect such a cutie! ๐ฅน ๐
