The Museum of the Great Southern is located in Menang country, providing exhibitions, public programs and information about the region's natural and social history. The Western Australian Museum is comprised of multiple museum sites, reflective of our State's rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage. The Museum of the Great Southern is located in Menang country and overlooks Princess Royal H

arbour, Albany, the site of the first European settlement in WA. The Museum shares the histories of the Menang Noongar* people, early settlers and convicts, and acts as a gateway to the unique natural heritage of our Great Southern.

*As advised by the WA Museum Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the Museum acknowledges the different forms of pronunciation and spelling of the word Nyoongar/Noongar/Nyungar.

👀 It's not like other Marsupials...

Gilbert’s potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) holds the title for Australia’s most endangered and the rarest marsupial in the world – and it’s not had an easy time since it was first described in the 19th century.

Thought to be extinct until 1994, when a small population was discovered 35 km from Albany, the Gilbert’s potoroo has overcome incredible odds. A rogue lightning strike later ignited a bushfire that burned 90% of its habitat, yet the species continues to claw its way back from extinction thanks to key recovery efforts led by the WA Government.

And who wouldn't want to protect such a cutie! 🥹 💕

Hear how modern research in conjunction with the Kalyagul: Connections to Menang Country exhibition has revealed new facts about the artist Robert Neill and the importance of his work to the interpretation of settler history in Albany.

🐌 A call for snail lovers and budding citizen scientists! 🔬

National Science Week is almost here, and there’s still time to get involved in our snail events with WA Museum scientists Lisa Kirkendale and Corey Whisson.

From discovering how DNA and the 'Snail Snap' initiative are helping uncover new species, to learning about the incredible diversity of native land snails, there’s plenty to discover.

And for those ready to get out into nature, join Lisa and Corey for the Snail Hunt at Marbelup Nature Reserve! 🌿 🐌
