Next weekend! In Conversation with Susan Wirth
Saturday 12th September 2026, 2pm

Join artist Susan Wirth in conversation with Ararat Gallery TAMA Coordinator Katy Mitchell to celebrate the opening of Susan’s exhibition 'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking', on Saturday 12th September 2026, 2pm.

'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking' is a series of textile collages by Susan Wirth, developed through periods of research in and around Ararat and the Wimmera Mallee. The project examines how visitor status, site specificity, and settler heritage intersect in a contemporary textile practice. Using found textiles and second hand woollen blankets - materials tied to industrial manufacturing and histories of colonisation - Wirth constructs geometric, rhythmical compositions that operate as scaffolds for formal and conceptual exploration.

Banksias and wildflowers, observed in fire affected and regenerating environments, introduced a focus on cycles of disturbance, renewal, and adaptation into the project, with seasonal patterns functioning as a structural framework rather than a lyrical subject. Wirth’s process of cutting, arranging, and reassembling textiles emphasises reconstruction and deconstruction as key methodologies, aligning everyday acts of sleeping, dreaming, and waking with incremental processes of making and thinking.

'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking' positions Wirth's creativity as an experience sorted, filtered, and slowly articulated through material engagement, bringing questions of place, inheritance, and ongoing occupation into view without resolving them, and situating the work within broader discourses on environment, history, and contemporary textile practice.

This event is free entry, with bookings requested and essential to help plan catering and seating → araratgallerytama.com.au/event/in-conversation-susan-wirth/

'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking' will be open until Sunday 14th February 2027.

Rich storytelling paired with incredible music, Inventi weaves tale after tale from the story of 1001 nights including 3 brand new works based on more of these stories by Australian composers Ella Macens, Caerwen Martin and Tristan Coehlo.

NOW OPEN: Susan Wirth | Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking

On Saturday 12th September 2026 at 2pm, join artist Susan Wirth in conversation with Ararat Gallery TAMA Coordinator Katy Mitchell to celebrate the opening of Susan’s exhibition 'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking'.

'Sleeping, Dreaming, Waking' is a series of textile collages developed through periods of research in and around Ararat and the Wimmera Mallee. The project examines how visitor status, site specificity, and settler heritage intersect in a contemporary textile practice. Using found textiles and second‑hand woollen blankets – materials tied to industrial manufacturing and histories of colonisation – Wirth constructs geometric, rhythmical compositions that operate as scaffolds for formal and conceptual exploration.

Wirth is a Naarm (Melbourne) based artist whose practice works across sculpture, collage and video. Working with second-hand and found materials, she produces low-relief textile works and site-responsive installations that foreground materiality, process and the transformative potential of everyday experience. Through layering, accumulation and acts of reconfiguration, Wirth engages abstraction to examine perception, consciousness and the entangled histories of settler identity in relation to place.

FINAL DAY
Lisa Waup | after ever here
Guest curated by Coby Edgar
Closes today at 4pm, Sunday 16th August 2026

-

After I have gone
I take with me memory
Of place and time

Feathers furrowed
Twine creased
Red thread follows
Blood lines/fate lines

Ever omnipresent
Eternally linked in life force

Make real the invisible
To hold in hands
Lean into bodies

Here

FINAL WEEKEND!
Lisa Waup | after ever here
Guest curated by Coby Edgar
Closes at 4pm on Sunday 16th August 2026

“Lisa sits on the edge of eternity and sees what I wish the rest of the world would see. A universe after ever here of a time beyond forever. When those two women held each others hands at the baby shower, they were in the after ever here together. When eternity itself has passed something still remains to hold you. This show is Lisa’s after ever here, a gift of loving kindness that spans decades and gives us the new and old. How powerful it is to be held by her as she extends that stunning web of red string she is so devotedly weaving.”
