Apparently one of Ballarat Districts greatest icons, the Lal Lal Falls are "dry" according to ABC news reports.

Indigenous and environmental groups are accusing a Chinese company of hoarding water on a Victorian property and causing a sacred waterfall to run dry.

A lovely night sky out there right now - fresh, clear and cold. Waxing Crescent Moon and Venus/Jupiter I think.

Magpie Geese (Anseranas semipalmata) at Fairyland, Lake Wendouree.

The Magpie Goose's domain is a wetland which is why Lake Wendouree suits them very well.

These geese are native to Australia and are protected nation wide.

They were never as frequent to Ballarat as they have been this year in my opinion.

In the past, they were often at the back of Fairyland and hard to see but they seem to have become less shy and moved out into public view.

Now, they seem to have migrated away with the arrival of winter or they may have retreated to a quieter spot on the Lake.

Last week they were there receiving the last of the winter sunshine.

These are a large bird somewhere between a swan and maybe a pelican in size, with the unmistakable black and white "magpie" livery, orange legs, reddish beak and a hump on its head.

If you look closely at the feet in the images, you will notice that unlike other geese, these have a prominent backward facing toe which enables them to grip a branch when roosting.

These are the only geese on the planet that roost in trees overnight.

According to Birdlife Australia, Magpie Geese can be nomadic or small groups may remain localised.

These birds feed on aquatic plants and grasses

Lets hope they stay as we will have them for the breeding season.

****************GUESS WHAT***************

The Commonwealth Bank on the corner of Lydiard and Sturt Sts is no more !

They have moved to a new shop in the Bridge Mall .

In the cold pouring rain today, workmen dismantled and removed signage and the interior is also being be identified.

I'm sure there are going to be lots of comments but while I was there briefly - two different people asked me where the auto teller was now located.

Ballarat has been highlighted in a new book, the BALLARALPHABET.

Written by Tamara Sheward and beautifully illustrated by Annie Walters. A lovely way of highlighting our city, such as L for Lake, S for swan – all the letters of the alphabet, highlighting Ballarat.

As is says on Tamara’s website:
“This rigorously researched, exquisitely illustrated book is a colourful, curious A–Z romp through Ballarat’s history and landmarks. It’s the FIRST BOOK of its kind! Letter by letter, BALLARALPHABET brings all the perks and quirks of this nation-shaping city together in one engaging, easy-to-read picture book’.

You can order the book via the website or visit Collins Bookstore in Lydiard Street.

For more than 150 years, Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Wisdom has stood atop the Ballarat Mechanics Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute

Installed in 1868, Minerva would have seen incredible weather and events.

So much so that her arm was apparently ripped off in a 1960's storm.

We have quite a few sentinel statues in the city and the most impressive I think, in Black and White anyway, are Queen Victoria and Minerva.

Queen Victoria was a bit later arriving than Minerva but both are very imposing creations.

The Queen Victoria Statue is located in Sturt Street, directly in front of the Ballarat Town Hall and known as Victoria Square.

Commissioned in 1897 to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, this historic landmark has stood at the centre of Ballarat since 1902.

Apparently crafted from a combination of marble, sandstone, bronze, and granite.

The monument is significant as it serves as a tribute to Queen Victoria's long reign and Ballarat's historical allegiance to the British Empire.

Queen Victoria was crowned on 28th June 1838, aged 19 and died on January 22, 1901, at the age of 81. Her reign was 63 plus years.

Minerva is much more visibly prominent, sitting high atop the city and easily visible in the CBD.

These images are black and white in keeping with their creation time.

1925-40 aerial photos of the old Ballarat Gaol.

The gaol was commenced in 1856 and completed in 1862 with 58 cells. Thirteen prisoners were executed within the prison walls; the first in 1864 and the last in 1908. The gaol was closed in 1965 to allow the School of Mines (SMB) to expand its facilities. Some of the gaol buildings were demolished but the gates and walls were retained.

There's some fun information in William Withers' book: The History of Ballarat, from the First Pastoral Settlement to the Present Time.

-------------------

"The Gaol, at the southern end of Lydiard street, was commenced in 1856 by Gray, a builder, whose contract was for £9000. In 1857 a wooden stockade, surrounding the site, was blown down during a gale; another was erected and then removed as useless. New extended plans for the gaol were prepared in 1858, and a second contract was begun in December of that year by Evans and Barker, builders, the contract being for £4000. Then, such is the genius of Government architects for blundering, the plan was condemned, and Evans and Barker contracted for £9000 more to alter what had been done, so as to make the gaol plan radiating. Then there was a contract let to Williams and Young at £9000 for the er****on of boundary walls and certain offices, the establishment as it now stands being completed early in 1862, at a total cost of between £40,000 and £50,000."
