We catchup with B-P's 'Tommy the Tenderfoot' at camper. Tommy is a loose canon in camp and things go flying on his watch. We hope he is learning from his mistakes!

Big smiles on the faces of the 2nd Caulfield Troop in 1957.
They had just returned from a winning result for Stradbroke Cup at Gilwell bearing the Cup and pennants.
Times change, and this Group is sadly no longer with us, but the big news is that they are reforming in 2026 under new leadership and a new name: Caufield Park.

Sometimes we have to stop and think about the age ranges in Scouting. Joeys see the 'big scouts' in uniform and inspire them to grow towards Rovers. Rovers are seen as an important resource across Scouting; helping with weekly programs, the strength behind Major Events and also growing by participating in activities in their own section - Rover Scouts.

We found this small leatherette pouch in a recent donation. Scouts continue to collect and swap badges at Jamborees and other events, gathering the more colourful and artistic badges available today. A Scout recently asked how many badges had ever been produced. Can anyone hazard a guess worldwide of the numbers?

We rejoin our intrepid Scout, Tommy the Tenderfoot, a series created by Baden-Powell in later editions of Scouting for Boys'.
Tommy is off to camp, loaded up with every conceivable item of kit (probably packed by Mum). Of course this would not happen with todays Scouts with their lightweight tent, sleeping bag and camp mattress? Unless there is a hike into camp involved, a Scout today would be seen dragging a Jamboree bag on wheels. Poor Tommy!

From the log book of the 1st Albert Park Troop, we can glean a snapshot of their December 1953 camp and their activities.
SHV has many examples of Troop and Patrol Logbooks, recording camp and weekly activities - fancy a fire drill activity to put out a campfire (safely)!
Albert Park Group still exists today in the same hall built for them, in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Albert Park.

From the catalogue of the 1924 Wembley Jamboree in the UK, we still see these devices in use at Jamborees and other major events. Collecting food from the Q- Store, gas bottles, ice and a whole of of items, the trek cart remains a key Unit resource at camp. In the past, some Jamborees had an activity where trek carts were raced over a field, dismantled to take it over an obstacle fence, reassembled and raced on to the finish.
Check out your Q Store to see if you have one hiding at the back of the store.

These intrepid Scouts from Essendon are off to the 1948-49 Jamboree at Wonga Park in Victoria. In full uniform as they enter the camp, their packs seem incredibly small to contain clothes, sleeping bag and other items for the 10 day camp.
We suppose that leaders made sure they had all the essential items for the event.

Hi all, meet Rupert, a Wolf Cub from 5th Camberwell North in 1953.
Rupert is fittingly dressed in the Wolf Cub uniform on the era, complete with proficiency badges.
Rupert is on display in the downstairs foyer of the Victorian Scout Centre in Mt Waverley as a part of our SHV display to celebrate the 110 years of Cub Scouts.
Drop in and say hello to him.

Its winter, snow time and a chance for Rovers (and now Venturers) to visit and explore the high plains and stay at the well appointed Bogong Ski Chalet. Built in the 1930s it has been the treasured home of Rover Skiing for almost 100 years.
Of course advertising and bookings today are via Facebook and other social media outlets, but it is still the spiritual home of Rover skiing.
