Canberra based artist Lynne Flemons wrote, “BigCi is a unique residency program, and I have participated in many artists residencies. Rae and Yuri are an experienced team of artist and environmentalist, whose vision for BigCi is fully realised in the amazing environment here. Yuri’s wilderness walks and Rae’s curatorial eye combine to provide an immersive and supportive experience.
Popping across the dirt road to Wollemi National Park or just out the door to the bush landscapes of BigCi provided inspiration for my work. My project involved the concept of Camouflage, and I began this by capturing the shadows of flora in drawings made while walking in both places. Spring flowerings added to the intensity and complexity of the experience. The wonderful privilege of sharing this place with other artists meant ideas expanded over talks and sharing of work.
I was very happy to have realised a body of work that explores what I set out to do but in a completely surprising way.”

Meet Julie Mia Holmes, NSW South Coast, at BigCi Open Day tomorrow, on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11.00-4.00.
Julie’s practice, predominantly printmaking and drawing, is grounded in the physicality of being in nature. Deep observation and gestural drawing using natural materials connect her to place and the hidden histories embedded in the landscape. Birds, small insects and understory all become part of the drawing, the sensuality and sensory connectedness of being on country.
Julie was drawn to Wollemi for its resilience after fire, the tenacity of epicormic growth and the hope inherent in new shoots. During her second residency at BigCi, Julie has made large scale drawings within the landscape, using ink foraged from the bark of Eucalypt trees, following water flow and the undulating topography of sandstone.

Meet Kate Gorringe-Smith, environmental artist, Melbourne, at BigCi Open Day on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11.00-4.00.
While Kate’s practice is based in print-making, she also uses cyanotype and eco-printing – techniques that utilise local elements to ground them in place. For over a decade Kate’s work has focussed on migratory shorebirds and their wetland habitat. At BigCi, far from the shore, birds again provide a window into the subtleties of the mountain ecology. In this unique, dry and fire-wracked landscape, sculpted by time and water, Kate’s works on paper investigate signs of hidden water. Epicormic growth, secret swamps, tiny flowers, bird calls and insects; these inspire the mark-making that maps her response to place. At the Open Day, Kate will demonstrate the unrolling of an eco-print and explain the technique.

Meet Bronwyn Rees, printmaker, Melbourne, at BigCi Open Day on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11.00-4.00.
Bronwyn has long wanted to come to BigCi and to expand on her print-making practice. The flora and fauna of Wollemi’s sandstone escarpment is reminiscent of her hometown, Wollongong, on Dharawal country. Yuri’s exposition of how sandstone stores and releases water was the direct inspiration for her large-scale installation on the concrete water tank outside the Art Shed. Bronwyn’s Open Day contribution will include an artist talk and a special performance.

Meet Alessandra Maoggi, performer and writer from Florence, Italy, at BigCi Open Day on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11.00-4.00.
Alessandra is the winner of 2025 Arte Laguna/BigCi Award. Alessandra’s practice investigates the relationship between human and more-than-human bodies.
Her project Alamb is a generative performance in which the body merges with clay, shaping ever-changing landscapes inhabited by polymorphic sculptures. The formations interact with one another and with the public, within a soundscape composed of planetary frequencies and the galloping of horses.
In BigCi, Alamb found a new dimension that stems both from direct contact with nature and from the opportunity to explore and to experiment with the natural clay found in the area.

Meet Canberra-based artist Lynne Flemons at BigCi Open Day on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11.00-4.00.
Lynne works predominantly with painting and drawing, exploring themes of land use and sense of place. Her practice is embedded in the experience of walking and drawing in the landscape as a way of connecting with and discovering place.
Lynne’s current research topic of camouflage marries a love for the richness and diversity of native flora found here at BigCi and in Wollemi NP with personal stories of loss due to war. Through investigating WW2 camouflage techniques, she gives space for Intergenerational trauma by incorporating shadow distortion and patterning found in the bush and connects these to themes of presence and absence, remembrance and loss.

Meet Bonnie Porter Greene, painter, NSW South Coast, at BigCi Open Day on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 11.00-4.00.
Bonnie’s painting practice is defined by playfulness, exploration and wonder, recording the energy of nature and the joy it evokes. Nature provides a safe space to feel, observe and paint. Using bold colour and gestural mark-making, she creates painted ecosystems.
While at BigCi, Bonnie worked on an evolving body of work Accumulated Landscapes, creating dialogue between regional Australian landscapes through layered oil paintings on paper. Each new layer responds to a location's unique environment, with the paper accumulating history and materiality until it nears its physical limits - connecting one landscape that shapes our perception of another over time.

Caroline Andrieu, based in the south of France, works across photography, drawing, and digital art. She said, “During my residency at BigCi, I explored the Australian landscape through photography, drawing and mixed media. I was particularly inspired by the eucalyptus trees of the Blue Mountains, their movement, shapes and individual personalities. Observing the landscape every day became an important part of my creative process. My research gradually developed through sketchbooks, digital experiments and larger works on rice paper, allowing me to explore transparency, scale and movement. I also experimented with new ways of combining photography and drawing. Working in this exceptional natural environment encouraged me to explore new relationships between image, space and installation.”
