NOW OPEN | ‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’.

‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’ comprises almost 70 works from the Griffith University Art Collection, as well as ephemera and objects on loan from Page’s estate, to offer a new perspective on his oeuvre.

Although regarded as one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century, Page was a dedicated anti-war campaigner who used both his photography and writings to be a strong voice for peace.

Please join us for a special double opening night as we celebrate not only Tim Page OAM (1944-2022), but also his friend and collaborator JP Willis, whose exhibition ‘Love is in the air’ opens 2nd June in QCAD Gallery’s Webb Gallery.

We’ll be joined by special guest Simon Wright, Assistant Director, Learning and Public Engagement QAGOMA and past Director of GUAM, who will officially open the exhibition.

Griffith University Art Museum will be closed until the 1st of June 2026 as we install ‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’.

Curated by Carrie McCarthy and QCAD Head of Photography Dr Amy Carkeek, this exhibition comprises almost 70 photographic works from the Griffith University Art Collection, as well as ephemera and objects from the artist’s archive, to offer a new perspective that considers Page’s often-overlooked formalistic style and uniquely cinematic eye for colour, light and composition. In an era saturated with images of conflict, this exhibition is a reminder of the affecting power of photography and how, despite being regarded as one of the world’s leading documenters of war, Page’s archive reveals a commitment to highlighting injustice and being a strong voice for peace.

‘Tim Page: The very edge of the brightest light’ is curated by Carrie McCarthy and Dr Amy Carkeek.

Despite the rain, we had a wonderful turnout last night for the second of our new Pep Talk series with and alum Dylan Mooney!

Pep Talks is a new series that offers a chance to hear from QCAD legends about their practice and career trajectory since graduating, as well as the advice they wish they’d heard when they were first starting out.

Huge thanks to Dylan for sharing some honest insights into his rapidly successful career and how he’s managed to juggle all the attention that’s come his way!

And big thanks to Prof Sue Best for once again managing the barbecue with such panache! 🌭

Pep Talks are your chance to hear from QCAD legends about their practice and career trajectory since graduating, as well as the advice they wish they’d heard along the way.
This Thursday we’re delighted to talk with Dylan Mooney, who graduated from Griffith University’s Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art Program (CAIA) in 2021!

Our Pep Talks are designed to be casual and engaging, and an amazing opportunity for students and our general audience to get to know the local arts community and hear from some of the best and brightest artists who began their careers at QCAD!

About Dylan:
Dylan Mooney is a Yuwi, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander man from Mackay in North Queensland working across painting, printmaking, digital illustration and drawing.
Influenced by history, culture and family, Mooney’s practice responds to current affairs, social media, and the knowledge and stories passed down to him, rethinking digital technologies and artistic practices to consider contemporary issues around identity, desire and representation.

Mooney has been included in major exhibitions such as 'After the Rain: 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial' at the National Gallery of Australia; 'Ten Thousand Suns: the 24th Sydney Biennale', 'Say Our Name' at Queensland Museum; 'Dylan Mooney: And Then Life Was Beautiful' at the Australian Embassy, Berlin; and 'Blak Rainbow: the Art of Dylan Mooney' at the Australian Embassy Gallery, Paris. Currently included in High Colour at the Art Gallery of NSW, he will present new work in 'Dylan Mooney: Intertwined' at Redland Art Gallery later this year.

To all our mums and motherly figures – Happy Mother’s Day!

We hope you all feel loved and appreciated by those around you - those you care for, love unconditionally and who, frankly, drive you mad a lot of the time!

Lesley Goldacre’s work explores family, feminism, and the role of autobiography in her work. Her ‘Rites of Passage series 2’ was taken over a five-year period, documenting a mother and her two daughters underwater. This process of documentation exposed the changing dynamics between these women.

‘Each year there appeared changes in the relationships between them, signified by the unconscious body language of the figures. The sequences address issues of the feminine, the mother / daughter relationship, the biophilic gesture.’
