Heide Museum of Modern Art Art—Architecture—Landscape
(2140)

Heide Museum of Modern Art began life in 1934 as the home of John and Sunday Reed and has since evolved into one of Australia's most important cultural institutions. Heide, as it is affectionately known, has built a national reputation based upon the vision of the Reeds and their role in the development and promotion of modern art in Australia. Inspired by the Reeds' nurturing of the young artists of their generation, Heide continues to support the contemporary art of today through its collection and exhibition program.

Hands emerge across the exhibition as sites of transmission, making, and knowledge exchange. They weave, carve, record, paint, repair, burn, plant, harvest, and hold. They carry memory and embody responsibility.

Watch These Hands is both an instruction and an invitation: to pause and witness how artists, Elders, and cultural leaders actively shape and fight for the futures to which we are all accountable. It reminds us that artists are not merely observers of change; they are custodians of cultural memory and active participants in sustaining the conditions for culture and life.

Closing this weekend, book today to experience Watch These Hands. Members go free 🎟️

The intensity and sometimes erotic surreality of John Foubister’s imaginative landscapes speak to a vibrant inner world.

Creating from memory and reworking paintings over an extended period, John’s process imbues a hallucinogenic charge. Trees are inflected with a humorous edge, while stones, birds and shrubs assume a keen strangeness.

Ken Whisson & John Foubister: Going Back In is an investigation of artistic influence and camaraderie, exploring the meaningful ways in which personal friendship can sustain creative individuals and foster artistic traditions across place and across time.

"It is extraordinary how it spreads over the hillside, with one or two of its walls towering up to the sky, and yet it all merges with the trees and the slope as thought it had just grown naturally there." — John Reed

Writing to his friend Mary Perceval in 1965, John Reed couldn't help but express his delight during the construction of Heide II. Embedded in its surrounding gardens and landscape as the Reeds requested, Heide II remains one of Melbourne's most iconic modernist buildings.

Happy birthday to the fearless and fabulous Sunday Reed🌹

Born Lelda Sunday Baillieu in 1905, Sunday grew up in Toorak at her family's property Balholmen. She married her soul mate and life partner John Reed in 1932, and the couple purchased Heide two years later, making it their home for the rest of their lives.

Rather than becoming an artist herself, Sunday became a benefactor, supporter, collector and champion of modern art. The Heide gardens would be her creative outlet and life’s work, sharing her passion for gardening and love of the natural world with everyone who visited.

‘It is through your photographs that I can judge my sculptures’ — Picasso

First meeting in 1932, Brassaï and Picasso became collaborators and close friends over the next 40 years, with Brassaï releasing two publications about their work together. Their collaboration began under extenuating circumstances, with Picasso entrusting Brassaï to document what remained of his sculptural work in 1943, during the German occupation of Paris.

'Les Sculptures de Picasso—Photographies de Brassaï', a collection of photographs from this endeavour, was released by Brassaï following the war's conclusion. In 1964, Brassaï followed up with a second publication, 'Conversations with Picasso', which became a key reference work translated into several languages.

Closing 15 Nov, Brassaï: Secret Paris is a fascinating visual journey into the intimate world of 1930s Paris. Book today, members go free 🎟️

Both ephemeral and eternal 💫 to Brassaï graffiti was a bewitching visual language and powerful form of popular expression.

Over forty years Brassaï studied and photographed anonymous scrawls and inscriptions on the buildings of Paris, developing a thematic classification system for its evolving language: wall propositions/the wall as inspiration, the language of the wall, the birth of humankind, masks and faces, animals, love, death, magic, and primitive images.

Open until 15 November, Brassaï: Secret Paris is a fascinating visual journey into the intimate world of Paris in the 1930s.
