This facility is owned & operated by the City of Bunbury Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Closed public holidays.

The Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre sits on Wardandi Noongar Boodja, is owned, managed, and operated by the City of Bunbury. The City acknowledges the traditional owners of the land, the Wardandi Noongar people, and pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging. Entry is free!

Join Museum staff for a community memory session exploring the history and stories of the Rathmines area - now known as East Bunbury. The session aims to bring together residents, local history enthusiasts, and anyone with a connection to the area to share stories about school days, fishing families, community life and what made Rathmines its own special place. The stories and recollections will be gathered in preparation for an exciting new exhibition coming to the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre.

⚡Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre - Closed due to power outage ⚡
The storm has taken out power to the building, so we've had to close the Museum for the rest of today. The Bunbury Visitor Centre, also located in our building, is closed too.

Our team is on it, making sure our collections and exhibitions are looked after while we ride this one out.

Please stay safe out there, take care of each other, and stay out of this weather if you can! 🌧️

All this term, the History’s Mysteries artefacts have been touring local schools, where students can get up close to the artefacts that will inspire their stories. Just like pictured on display at Bunbury Senior High School and Bunbury Catholic College.

The History's Mysteries Young Writers Competition brings history to the forefront and challenges students to imagine the unknown history behind a selection of significant museum artefacts. This year, young writers will step inside the life of a West Australian convict as they plan their great escape, inspired by the 150th anniversary of the Catalpa rescue. In 1876, the great escape of Irish political prisoners from Fremantle prison involved elaborate planning, international espionage, fundraising, a whaling barque named the Catalpa and a good dose of daring.

All the artefacts will return to the Museum for display during the July school holidays (4-19 July), allowing students to view and be inspired by them. History's Mysteries is open to all students aged 9–18 years who live or attend school in the Greater Bunbury area. Entries are now open and close on 31 July 2026.

Twenty years of blues, live music, and keeping the blues alive in the South West - and last Thursday, we got to celebrate every moment of it!
We were thrilled to host the launch of '20 Years of the South West Blues Club', a display co-curated with South West Blues Club showcasing the unique memorabilia, photographs, memories, and materials that tell the Club's incredible story.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along, and congratulations to the SW Blues Club on 20 remarkable years 🎶

The display is on now until August 2026. Free entry, Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–4pm.

JOIN THE TEAM / Museum Education and Public Programs Officer
We are seeking a creative and delivery-focused Education and Public Programs Officer to design and facilitate engaging programs for a wide range of audiences.
This is a part-time role with a strong emphasis on hands-on program delivery, community connection and collaborative partnerships.

As the Museum Education and Public Programs Officer, you will plan, develop and deliver high-quality education and public programs that connect people of all ages with local history and heritage. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on facilitating programs and building relationships.

Position Details:
📆 Part-time, 25 hours per week
💰 Hourly rate $43.30 plus superannuation
☑️ Strong facilitation, presentation skills, and experience delivering education, community or public programs to varied audiences.
🖋️ Experience developing learning resources or programs, ideally linked to curriculum outcomes, and experience in grant writing or securing funding is highly desirable.

Key responsibilities:
• Plan, develop and deliver classes, tours and public programs for diverse audiences
• Facilitate engaging and inclusive learning experiences for schools, including curriculum-linked programs and resources
• Collaborate with internal teams and partners to design and deliver initiatives that enhance visitor engagement, including exhibition-related events
• Deliver established programs such as Winter Warmers and the History's Mysteries Young Writers Competition, maintaining strong stakeholder relationships
• Identify, apply for and acquit grant funding to support program delivery and development
• Coordinate program logistics, including bookings, resources and scheduling
• Monitor and evaluate program outcomes to inform continuous improvement

To all the incredible people who nurture, guide, care and love unconditionally — mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, guardians, and anyone who has played a caring role in someone’s life, Happy Mother’s Day!

During last year’s WA Women’s Hall of Fame exhibition, we invited visitors to decorate a triangle dedicated to an inspiring woman in their life and add it to our Bunbury Honour Quilt (inspired by Judy Chicago’s collaborative artwork ‘International Honor Quilt’).
Seeing so many triangles dedicated to mothers and grandmothers shows us just how deeply loved you are.

THE CLOAKROOM LAUNCH EVENT / 20 Years of the South West Blues Club
Everyone is invited to the opening event celebrating the inaugural display in our new space. Co-curated by the South West Blues Club, this new community display at the Bunbury Museum showcases the Club’s dedication to keeping blues music alive in Bunbury for the past two decades.

Today is International Firefighters' Day 💙❤️
Terri Kowal (Captain) and members of the Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade visited the Bunbury Museum for International Firefighters' Day.
Terri and her crew checked out Terri’s uniform and the other items loaned from the Brigade as a part of our current exhibition, Defining Symbols of Australia, where ‘fire truck’ is one of the eight symbols that define Australia and its people.

Observed annually on May 4, IFFD honours the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of firefighters worldwide. Established in 1999 following the tragic deaths of five firefighters in Australia, the day pays respect to the lives lost in the line of duty and thanks those who continue to protect communities.

Thank you to Terri, members of the Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, and all volunteer and career firefighters for their extraordinary commitment to protecting our community.💙❤️

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Wednesday for our Heritage Conversations 2026: Change forum. It was a fantastic day full of engaging speakers, discussions and networking opportunities for local history enthusiasts, heritage organisations, and industry leaders.

We welcomed a stellar lineup of expert speakers from the City of Gosnells, City of Bunbury, South West Historical Writers Group, City of Busselton - Local Government, and the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Western Australia.
Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us!

We hope to continue bringing more opportunities in the future for organisations in the Greater Bunbury area to collaborate and learn about the collection, preservation, and historical storytelling.
