CLOSING SOON / Billy Missi'n Wakain Thamai
Explore the powerful artistic legacy of the late Torres Strait Islander artist Billy Missi.
Deeply influenced by the storytelling, song, and dance traditions of his Wagadagam Tribe, his artistic journey combined traditional carving techniques with modern linocut methods, creating a unique aesthetic that earned international recognition before his passing in 2012.

This exhibition brings together over 50 of the artist's most significant and iconic prints, including rare and never-before-exhibited monoprints, etchings, and linoprints from Djumbunji Fine Art Press and private collections.

Curated by Dr Russell Milledge, this retrospective was developed in close consultation with the Billy Missi Estate, family members and friends, highlighting Missiโ€™s critical role in the emergence of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) printmaking as a contemporary art form.

Artist in Residence Q&A: Michelle Over
Western Australian painter Michelle Over spent her residency at BRAG creating bold, colour-driven canvases inspired by Neo Expressionism and Neo Fauvism.
We caught up with Michelle to chat about her work, her process, and what the residency has meant to her.

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธWhat have you been working on at BRAG?
A medium-large canvas I constructed specifically for this placement, inspired by a mash-up of two photographs of Italy taken by a good friend travelling there at the start of my residency, showing people at outdoor restaurants.
๐Ÿ“ปWhat does a typical day in the studio look like?
Iโ€™ll work on up to three paintings over the day, usually with music on. Because oil takes a long time to dry, I like to have several works on the go at once.
โœ‚๏ธWhere do you start?
I generally start with photographs of people, objects and places that inspire me, though sometimes itโ€™s just an idea. I begin by blocking out areas of the canvas in acrylic, which helps me place the image. Then I develop the idea in oil.
๐ŸŽจHow do you choose your colours?
My choice of colour is completely emotional. I get intuitive hits that I act on, and theyโ€™re usually the right choice in retrospect.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽจWhat does contemporary expressionism mean to you?
Raw emotion, bold colour, dramatic brushwork and distortion rather than realism or visual likeness, with colour chosen to evoke a mood or feeling. Along with Expressionists, Iโ€™m also influenced by Fauvists like Henri Matisse and Andrรฉ Derain, who used intense, unmixed colour and thick impasto to express emotion rather than describe reality. Other favourites include Tamara de Lempicka, Diego Rivera, Henri Rousseau and Franz Marc.
๐ŸซHow has working in the BRAG studio affected you?
Very positively. I normally work closeted away at home, so the open-door policy was challenging at first, but I adapted quickly. Iโ€™ve found peopleโ€™s appreciation of my work refreshing, encouraging and extremely validating.
๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธWhatโ€™s next?
A solo exhibition at Collie Art Gallery from 4 June to 5 July 2027. Iโ€™m continuing to produce new works and framing up to 40 paintings.

Meet Michelle in the studio on Thursdays and Saturdays until 31 October.

CLOSING SOON | Pasar Malam / Night Market
At the night market, you can buy fake Rolex watches, fried grasshoppers and amulets with โ€œmagicalโ€ powers. Skinny guys with tattoos operate carnival rides that arenโ€™t safe. Thereโ€™s a haunted house and a giant python. Gangsters, pickpockets and revolutionaries lurk in the shadows.

๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ/๐˜•๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต is an immersive exhibition of large-scale screen-printed works by 15 Indonesian and Australian artists exploring the transgressive allure and vibrant energy of the Indonesian night market.

In keeping with Java's slightly seedy, mysterious, and precarious night markets, the exhibition is designed as an immersive, engaging experience. Visitors will navigate a crowded, colourful space where artists bring the Night Market's chaos and permissiveness to life.

CLOSING SOON / 31
Christopher Youngโ€™s photographic practice is concerned with the traces people leave behind: places, objects, bodies, memories and the stories that accumulate around them. Across his series, photography becomes a way of excavating these fragments and asking what they might reveal about identity, belonging, absence and time.

The images are not staged. Rather, they are "as found" - encountered in the world and photographed in the condition in which Young discovers them. This distinction is important. Young does not construct the object or scene so much as locate, isolate and preserve it. Meaning emerges through the act of discovery, and through the gaps between what is visible and what can only be imagined.

Across the series, the photograph therefore becomes both evidence and mystery: a fragment of something that existed before the camera arrived, carrying traces of stories that may be recoverable, unknowable or entirely invented.
