Matthew John "Jack" McCarthy was born in 1874 in the Bothwell district. His birth name was registered as John Patrick McCarthy. He was the son of Michael and Mary Ann (nee Baker) McCarthy. Michael McCarthy was a farmer from Pitcairn’s Marsh. The schoolhouse museum is fortunate to have on display an axe and box owned by the late M J McCarthy which was donated by his son Mr C J McCarthy.
