Port of Echuca

Port of Echuca There’s always something happening at The Port of Echuca 🚢. Step into Australia’s Paddle Steamer Capital, where history meets the river’s everyday charm.

The Historic Port of Echuca precinct is an authentic working steam port, home to Australia’s largest fleet of steam-driven paddlesteamers. Although its major commodity has changed from wool to people, Port of Echuca still operates much the same as it did in the 1860s, with our shipwrights and steam engineers providing a vital role in the Port's operations today, just as they would have in the late 1800s.

Sitting high on the Murray and looking right at home. ⚓

Built in Echuca in 1866, the PS Adelaide has carried wool, towed barges loaded with red gum and spent more than a century working these waters. Today, she holds the title of the world’s oldest operating wooden-hulled paddlesteamer.

Not bad for 160 years old.

The Murray is on the rise! 💧

After the recent rain, the river is sitting high beneath the Echuca Wharf, creating some spectacular reflections among the historic red gum pylons.

But how does today’s river level compare with the past? Take a look at the gauge, then swipe to see the river just a few months ago, and the marker showing the extraordinary height reached during the great flood of 1870.

More than 150 years later, the Wharf is still keeping a record of the Murray’s ever-changing story.

Caleb and Hunter have been working very hard behind the scenes, pulling apart the boiler in our Mill Display in preparation for its upcoming inspection.

It’s not the cleanest job, but these two have been getting stuck in and getting it done!

A big thank you to Caleb and Hunter for their hard work helping to keep this important piece of our heritage in tip-top shape.

Some souvenirs you can wear, some you can taste

Not every Port memory has to stay behind you when you leave.

Grab a keyring shaped like the very engines you just explored, a stubby holder to keep next summer's drinks cold, or something a little more local, pink salt flakes harvested straight from the Murray, and raw honey from the apiarists just down the road.

Little ones can find their own favourite too, from Aussie-themed tees to plush mates for the trip home. 🍯

Pop into the Visitor Centre gift shop and take a little bit of The Port with you.
