Can I get the instant asset tax write off if I work from home?
The $20,000 instant asset write-off allows small businesses with an ABN and aggregated annual turnover under $10 million to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets — including original artworks — rather than depreciating them over years.
The $20,000 threshold applies per artwork, not per business, so you can purchase multiple works and claim each one separately.
The critical issue for home-based businesses: "business premises"
This is where it gets tricky. The artwork must be displayed or used in your business premises to qualify. The ATO's intent is that the work has a genuine business purpose — client-facing display, professional environment, etc.
For a home office, the ATO applies a business-use apportionment rule. If an asset serves both personal and business use, you can only claim the taxable purpose portion. For instance, if you use a vehicle 80% for deliveries and 20% privately, only 80% is deductible. The same logic applies to art in a home office — if it's in a shared living space, you'd likely only claim the business-use percentage.
What strengthens a claim for home-based workers:
The artwork is in a dedicated, exclusive home office space (not a living room or shared area)
You can document that clients, collaborators, or professional activities occur in that space
The purchase is clearly linked to a business purpose (not purely decorative in a personal space)
