🎄 Christmas Train Tickets – Important Update

Sold out!

We’re working hard behind the scenes to restore a third carriage in time for the event. If successful, this will allow us to release an additional 400 tickets across the three nights.

We’ll keep you updated on our progress and let you know if and when these extra tickets become available. We’ll provide as much notice as possible to give everyone an opportunity to secure tickets.

We understand there are many enquiries coming through, but with the volume of messages and emails we’re currently receiving, we’re unable to respond to every individual enquiry.

Please keep an eye on our page for the latest updates.

Thank you for your incredible support and patience. We’re doing everything we can to make more tickets available so more families can enjoy the magic of our Christmas Trains! 🎅

SS7 Restoration Update – All Hands on Deck!

It’s all hands on deck as our dedicated team works hard to get SS7 ready for the busy summer season!

There’s been plenty of progress, with several important milestones reached:

🔧 Bogie overhaul: One bogie has been stripped, inspected and reinstalled, while the second was removed from the carriage today for the same treatment.

🛠️ Luggage racks: New tubing has been installed to restore the carriage’s luggage racks.

🏠 New roof: The roof replacement is now approximately 90% complete, with the finishing touches not far away.

🎨 Painting: Internal painting and varnishing completed with exterior painting soon to commence.

🪵 Period-correct flooring: The team at Hayes Flooring has done an outstanding job installing the new floor covering, in keeping with the carriage’s period character. A big thank you to the team for their excellent work!

💺 Seats next: With the flooring complete, the freshly painted seats can now be installed.

Once completed, SS7 will provide an additional 44 seats for our visitors, helping us accommodate the crowds during our busiest periods.

A huge thank you to everyone that has donated and been involved in bringing this restoration project closer to the finish line. Every bit of work gets us one step closer to having SS7 back in service and ready to welcome our passengers this summer!

One year. Less IT headaches. More restoration!

It’s been 12 months since we commenced our partnership with Netier and what a difference it has made.

Instead of spending valuable volunteer time chasing IT problems, we have focused on the important stuff — restoring locomotives, carriages, buses and everything else that keeps the museum moving.

With support only a phone call away, Netier has kept us on track when we’ve needed a helping hand.

Thanks to the Netier team for 12 months of fantastic support!

Big news!

The Tasmanian Transport Museum Society today welcomes the formal notification from the Honourable Kerry Vincent MLC that he has approved on behalf of the Tasmanian Government the Museum's request to extend its current lease over the rail corridor from Mentmore Street, Glenorchy to Granton including the former Granton Station building.

While no time frame has been given for lease signing, work on the necessary surveys, declarations and Parliamentary approvals is to begin immediately by Building Tasmania.

The Museum's President, Jeff Bronstein, notes this is a vote of confidence in the Museum's ability to successfully operate rail services over the corridor; "This agreement by the Tasmanian Government not only acknowledges the hard work the Museum does to preserve Tasmania's rail transport heritage but also underscores our efforts aimed at building tourism-based infrastructure. The Museum looks forward to working with Minister Vincent and Building Tasmania to deliver the next stage of our Hobart heritage rail plan" Mr Bronstein said.

Happy Father’s Day!

The sun is out, M5 is sizzling, and soon so will the snags on the BBQ!

We have approximately 50 tickets remaining across our five train rides today, available on a first come, first served basis.

So, if you’re still wondering what to do with Dad today, get down to the Tasmanian Transport Museum and treat him to a steam train ride!

Don’t miss out — once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Happy Father’s Day from everyone at TTMS!

Attention is now turning to the bicentennial decals for ZA6 🇦🇺

Like everything else involved in restoring and preserving our heritage rolling stock, reproducing these decals doesn’t come cheaply.

To help cover the cost, we’ve reopened a small fundraiser specifically for the ZA6 bicentennial decals.

Every contribution, big or small, helps and if you’d like to help, donations can be made via the link below or via PayPal on our website.

It’s all hands on deck aboard former suburban carriage SS7!

Work is progressing well on the restoration of SS7, with plenty happening both inside and out.

Inside the carriage, painting, varnishing and the installation of the new luggage racks is continuing at a steady pace.

Externally, roof replacement continues, broken windows are being removed and the overhaul of the brake components got underway today.

There’s still plenty of work ahead with work our December 1 deadline fast approaching 🎅

Trying to turn an all black locomotive into an embroidered patch isn’t an easy task. Getting shading and some features to stand out means some colour compromises and tweaks have to be made.

Thanks to A1 Insignia for the version 2 design of our Q5 patch.
