Have you ever wondered what installation art actually is?

Rooted in the experimental art movements of the 1960s, installation art brings together objects, materials and sensory elements designed to respond to the gallery space. Many works invite you to enter or move through them, engaging sight, sound and physical experience in ways that painting alone cannot.

New South Vol. 2: Recent Sculpture & Installation Art is a wonderful place to experience it for yourself.

Get into the studio with New South Vol. 2: Recent Sculpture & Installation Art
artist Mitchell Davis.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore Davis’s unique practice, combining industrial textiles, pattern-making, painting and sculpture into intimate patchwork pieces you can hold in your hands.

Mitchell Davis (b. 1995 in Sydney, Australia) is an emerging Australian artist living and working between Sydney and Gundungurra land in the Southern Highlands. Central to his practice are reparative acts of making and sculpting with found and industrial textiles, often to create covering or protective structures as well as wall-based paintings.

Susana Depetris’ second solo exhibition at the Broadhurst Gallery brings together recent paintings that examine how light and shadow interact through colour fields, hard edges, and geometric forms. Join us for Create and Make: Fantasy Objects, a free, drop-in workshop led by artist Sophie Willison.

Some stories deserve to be told properly. 📖

The Sanctuary: 25 Years of Hazelhurst Arts Centre catalogue is now available. A beautifully documented record of Hazelhurst's history and the people who shaped it.

The publication brings together reflections from past directors and curators, commissioned essays from those instrumental in the centre's story, and dedicated pages for all 25 artists featured in the exhibition including Del Kathryn Barton, George Gittoes, Hiromi Tango, Imants Tillers, Esme Timbery and Marilyn Russell, Jason Wing and Anne Zahalka, among many others.

A meaningful keepsake for anyone who loves Hazelhurst, and a lasting record of 25 years of art and community in the Sutherland Shire.

The New Artists Show brings together four early career artists with ties to southern Sydney, now based across Australia and beyond.

Featuring works by Oliver Fontany, Ella McGraw, Erica Nottage, and Bronte O'Shannessy, the exhibition ranges from intricate drawings to large-scale paintings.

As part of the exhibition program, Hazelhurst has partnered with several established local artists to provide one-on-one mentoring to our young artists, supporting the next generation of artistic talent and strengthening connections within our local arts community.

Bringing together an intergenerational group of 17 artists from across Southern Australasia, the exhibition features immersive installations and sculptural works that respond to one another and to the people who move through them. A vivid snapshot of contemporary sculptural practice.

Featuring works by Dan Arps, Hany Armanious, Nathan Beard, Bonita Bub, Francis Carmody, Lara Chamas, Mitchell Davis, Alicia Frankovich, Alex Gawronski, Matthew Griffin, Matthew Harris, Hootan Heydari, Claire Lambe, Chunxiao Qu, Jacqueline Stojanović, Sarah Ujmaia and Augusta Vinall Richardson.

To revel is to enjoy oneself in a lively, noisy way—to celebrate with abandon.

Martin John Oldfield is an artist drawn to assembling things, finding potential in everyday and found materials and coaxing them into something new. Each piece begins with a simple object and becomes something unexpected: a small, carefully considered world of its own.

Revel–Making brings together work from the past year, shaped by a rigorous and unruly process of artistic growth. Every act of making feels like a quiet tip of the hat to the universe, an acknowledgement of the gift of being able to create as a vocation.

Term 2 art classes for ages 12 to 16 are now open at Hazelhurst, and a few spots still remain. Make your own jewellery, explore illustration and narrative, work with clay, or learn to paint with watercolour. All classes are led by practising artists in a fun, welcoming environment.

"ARTEXPRESS 2026 artist Olivier Bridger from Edmund Rice College examines passing time through their photomedia work ‘Vanitas (An Ode to Gerhard Richter)’.

“Vanitas (An Ode to Gerhard Richter) investigates Renaissance concepts of memento mori. Renaissance still-life artists communicated both beauty and impermanence but even today, when images and data may appear eternal, human life remains finite. My body of work juxtaposes past and present, conveying how mortality continues to shape the human experience. I used a slight blurriness to represent mortality and decay while also referencing the imperfect textures and elements of Renaissance painting. Life is transient and death inevitable: my intention in my work was to encourage the audience to reflect on this inescapable truth.”

ARTEXPRESS 2026 continues until Sunday 12 April. Free entry, open 10.00am to 4.00pm daily.
