The Shift from Literal to Perceptual

Thirty years ago, Gemma Lynch-Memory was painting recognisable Australian landscapes. Fences, paddocks, mailboxes. Over decades, something shifted. The literal fell away. What remained was something harder to name but impossible to ignore: a pure investigation into how we see rather than what we see.

This evolution wasn't a departure. It was a deepening. Each exhibition moved closer to something more essential, more direct. The work became less about place and more about perception itself.

What you're looking at is the accumulation of thousands of hand-laid marks. Lynch-Memory works with hands, unconventional tools, and oil paint applied obsessively, layer upon layer. Powered sanders, dremels, scrapers. The surface becomes the subject. Texture isn't decoration here. It's the investigation itself.

The longer you stand with the work, the more you understand what's happening. This isn't about depicting something. It's about creating a physical experience that pulls you in and asks you to look harder.

Rust, weathering, worn edges. There's beauty there because there's honesty.

Gemma Lynch-Memory's 'Elemental' No.6 is a study in visual resolution.

Horizontal bands of blue and burnt orange emerge from thousands of hand-applied paint lines, each one placed without brush or palette knife. The composition embodies her philosophy: denser, darker anchoring the lower canvas, lightening toward clarity above.
