Notice that the Institute building was only one storey high at this time. The impressive second-storey additions that are now such a familiar part of the streetscape were completed in 1929, giving the building the grandeur we see today.

Also featured is the former Herald Printing Office, which now houses Bagot's Fortune, an interpretive display sharing the story of the Kapunda Mine and the people who helped shape our town's remarkable history.

Further along stands the building that is now the Kapunda Historical Museum. Originally serving as a Baptist Church from 1866 to 1948, it was acquired by the Education Department in 1949 and used as a technical school until the end of the 1960s. In 1971, it opened its doors as a museum, beginning a new chapter in preserving Kapunda's heritage.

These grand buildings are still standing strong and proud, continuing to tell the story of our community and the generations who lived, worked, learned and worshipped here.

Today, you can experience this history for yourself? Stroll through the Hill Street precinct, explore Bagot's Fortune, and discover the fascinating stories preserved within the Kapunda Historical Museum.

Kapunda played an important role in the career of one of Australia's most influential politicians during the Federation era.

Born in Ireland in 1855, Patrick McMahon Glynn was a highly educated lawyer who arrived in Australia in 1880. After struggling to find legal work in Victoria, he was offered an opportunity to establish a branch office of an Adelaide law firm right here in Kapunda.

What followed was an outstanding legal, political and journalistic career.
From 1883 to 1891, Glynn served as editor of the Kapunda Herald, writing almost 900 editorials on a wide range of topics. His sharp intellect and passion for public affairs helped pave the way for a successful political career.

Glynn went on to become a member of the South Australian Parliament and later played a significant role in shaping the Australian nation as a member of the Constitutional Conventions of 1897-98. Widely regarded as one of Australia's leading constitutional experts, he contributed to important issues including free trade, universal suffrage, Murray River water rights, and the standardisation of railway gauges.

He was elected to Australia's first Federal Parliament and served in several senior ministerial roles, including Attorney-General, Minister for External Affairs, and Minister for Home and Territories.

Despite his achievements, Glynn was known as a personable character with a keen sense of humour. One famous story tells of him spending an entire night winning at poker, only to arrive at the Kapunda Herald at 6am and write an editorial on the dangers of gambling!

Kapunda was also home to other members of the Glynn family, including his brother Dr Eugene Glynn, who practised medicine in Kapunda.

From lawyer and newspaper editor to Federation statesman, Patrick McMahon Glynn's story is another fascinating chapter in Kapunda's rich history.

Located west of Kapunda, Ross Creek often flowed strongly during winter, making access to town difficult and sometimes dangerous. The Working Men's Blocks, made up of 20-acre allotments, were established to allow families to build a home and grow their own food. While the idea was appealing, many found the combination of working all day and farming in their spare time challenging.

Over the years, local residents repeatedly called for a safer crossing. An early bridge was built by the Central Road Board in 1866, but it was reportedly washed away not long afterwards. Local women even petitioned for a footbridge to be constructed, highlighting just how important safe access was to the community.
In 1869, a horse crossing was cut through the creek, but concerns remained about its safety. Following a tragic fatality, the Kapunda District Council called for tenders to build a permanent stone bridge.

The bridge we see today was eventually constructed by Mr A. Munro in 1878-79, providing a much safer and more reliable connection for local residents.

More than 140 years later, Ross Creek Bridge remains a reminder of the determination of early Kapunda residents and the importance of connecting communities.

HMAS Kapunda was one of 60 Bathurst Class Corvettes built in Australia during World War II. Launched in Sydney on 23 June 1942, she was designed for mine-sweeping, convoy es**rt and anti-submarine duties. Powered by an 1,800-horsepower engine and crewed by 77 personnel, she served with distinction throughout the war.

HMAS Kapunda saw active service protecting convoys along Australia's east coast and in New Guinea waters. During several Japanese air attacks, she and other es**rt vessels successfully defended merchant ships, driving off enemy aircraft and assisting damaged vessels. Remarkably, no ship was ever lost while under her es**rt.

One of the ship's proudest moments came on 11 September 1945, when the surrender of Japanese forces in the South West Pacific area of Borneo was signed aboard HMAS Kapunda in Kuching Harbour. Following the war, she assisted in the repatriation of prisoners of war and civilians before returning to Sydney.
The people of Kapunda maintained a strong connection with the ship and her crew, regularly sending parcels and reading materials to support them during long deployments.

Over the course of the war, HMAS Kapunda steamed more than 100,000 miles before being placed in reserve in 1946 and eventually sold for scrap in 1961.
Her motto was: "Protect and Avenge."
