When David James arrived in Australia in 1877 with his mother, brothers and sister following the death of his father, the family settled in Kapunda, little knowing the remarkable path his life would take.

After working as a contractor in various parts of the country, David and his colleague Jim Poole were sinking dams at Mount Gipps Station when they were persuaded to join Charles Rasp in staking a claim on what would become the world-famous Broken Hill silver, lead and zinc mine. Although David later sold three-quarters of his share, the remainder entitled him to 500 BHP shares, linking him forever to one of Australia's great mining success stories.

Returning to Kapunda, David built a home in the town and became deeply involved in community life. He was elected to the Town Corporation and served two terms as Mayor, generously directing his mayoral allowance to local charities.

In 1895, he purchased Coalbrookvale, James White's property on the Eudunda Road, where he developed a highly successful horse and greyhound breeding enterprise. His racing achievements were outstanding. In 1894, his horse Broken Hill won the prestigious Australian Cup, and in 1895, Auraria captured both the VRC Oaks and the Melbourne Cup, winning at odds of 33 to 1 before a crowd of 90,000 spectators.

David's interests extended well beyond racing. He was a partner in Hawke & Co. with Rees Rees and was also a part owner of the Kapunda Herald newspaper.

His commitment to public service continued when, in 1902, he was elected to the South Australian Parliament as the representative for the newly created electorate of Wooroora.

David James's story is one of enterprise, community spirit and remarkable success, from the discovery of Broken Hill to the civic life of Kapunda. His legacy remains an important part of our town's rich history.

One of the highlights of our collection is a wonderful old tricycle, a reminder of a time when a set of wheels could provide hours of fun and freedom. Unlike many of today's battery-powered toys, children relied on imagination, outdoor play, and a little leg power to keep the fun going!

Our collection features a variety of historic children's toys that offer a fascinating glimpse into childhood through the generations. While toys may have changed, the joy of play has remained the same.
