The Museum of Human Disease is dedicated to:
Inspiring interest in personal and public health; promoting the understanding of medicine by providing access to resources, innovative exhibitions, educational programs as well as insight into the relevance of biomedical research; playing an important role in understanding of disease processes and disease prevention for UNSW students, health industry staff and the wider community.

💬 Have you ever asked a friend, sister, mum or colleague if they are up to date with their breast screening?

It might feel like a small conversation, but it can be an important one.
BreastScreen NSW recommends women aged 50–74 have a breast screen every two years, and women over 40 are eligible for free breast screening through the program.

Yet in NSW, almost 50% of women aged 50–74 have not had their recommended breast screen in the past two years.

So this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are making space for questions and conversation.

💗 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month is about more than wearing pink. It is a chance to start conversations, share reliable information and remind the people we care about that breast screening matters.

In NSW, more than 383,000 people had a breast screen in 2024–25, the highest screening year on record. But there is still more work to do, with only around half of eligible women aged 50–74 having their recommended breast screen within the two-year period.

That is why we are partnering with BreastScreen NSW this October for Be a Friend. Tell a Friend.

Bring your lunch, bring a friend and join us for a relaxed information session where you can learn about breast screening, what to expect and ask the questions you have always wanted to ask.

🎙️ Talk Nerdy: Connecting Curious Minds

We recently had the pleasure of meeting David Jacques at the Museum of Human Disease, and his fascinating interview on Talk Nerdy has just been released! 🧬🔬

In this episode, David explores how understanding the structure of viral capsids could open up new possibilities for drug discovery, from improving treatments for people living with HIV to investigating new ways to prevent HTLV transmission.

It is a fantastic insight into the research being undertaken by one of UNSW’s incredible researchers, and a great example of how understanding the structure of viruses can help shape the future of medicine.
