The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is a major destination for art, history and natural sciences in Northern Tasmania. The Art Gallery and Museum each enjoy a national profile for its collections of Australian colonial art, decorative arts and design, Tasmanian history and natural science. The Art Gallery

and Museum are located on two key sites: the 19th century railway workshop at Inveresk which houses the natural science and history collections, Planetarium, and The Blacksmith Shop; and its 1891 Royal Park building on Wellington Street which was officially opened as a dedicated Art Gallery in September 2011. QVMAG stands on the ancestral lands of the Stoney Creek nation, comprising the Tyerrenotepanner, Leterremairrener and Panninher clans. We acknowledge and pay respect to the Tasmanian Aboriginal people as the traditional custodians of the land on which QVMAG now stands and waters it adjoins. QVMAG is owned and operated by the City of Launceston with ongoing support from the Tasmanian Government. Our collection has been in the making since 1842, and includes significant acquisitions and donations from across the world. History, Natural Sciences and Visual Arts and Design are our key collection areas, cared for and exhibited for the community of Northern Tasmania. We are continually working with the community and peers to build and better understand this extensive and diverse collection as well undertaking new research into both existing and new collections and research areas. Long before studio pottery became widely recognised in Australia, Merric Boyd was experimenting with clay, developing a style inspired by the natural world while nurturing a creative life that would influence generations.

As his exhibition biography explains, "Drawing formed the backbone of his practice from an early age," allowing him to capture the world around him with extraordinary freedom and energy.

In his later years, as pottery became more physically challenging, his drawings became even more expressive, revealing "his spiritual philosophy, eccentricity and joy in making."

Hope Town is a photographer and multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores identity, community and the transformative possibilities of creativity.

A co-curator of Celebrating Identity: Activism and Ecstasy, she has exhibited across Australia and helped create the first public LGBTIQA+ Pride art exhibition in the Waratah-Wynyard municipality.

๐Ÿ–ผ Featured work: At Rest, In Motion (2025)

Through abstract photographic compositions, Hope explores the tension between structure and freedom. Her work reflects the realities of q***r life while celebrating resilience, creativity and new ways of being.

FINAL CALL: Beautiful Tensions closes this Sunday.

This remarkable exhibition brings together the distinct voices of Jess Dare, Lisa Furno, Catherine Truman and Sue Lorraine, the four current partners of Gray Street Workshop.

Showcasing new work to honour the momentous legacy and talent of the workshop, each artist transforms familiar materials into delicate sculptures and immersive installations โ€“ inviting visitors to slow down, look closely and uncover stories hidden within objects, landscapes and personal histories.

View this touring exhibition at the Art Gallery at Royal Park before it closes at 4pm on 30th August.

Meet the artist: Zanny Begg โœจ

Zanny Begg (born 1972) is an Australian artist-filmmaker. Begg works between documentary and fiction using experimental forms of storytelling to explore hidden and/or contested histories.

Begg is a participatory and collaborative artist who has exhibited in multiple exhibitions around the world including the Istanbul Biennale (2010); Taipei Biennial (2008), Sharjah Biennale (2011); and The National New Australian Art (2017). Her work consistently returns to themes of gender, spatial justice and resistance.

Visitors to the Art Gallery at Royal Park can discover Zanny's work ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ โ€“ the inaugural Artbank + ACMI Commission, supporting ambitious and experimental screen-based work at the nexus of film and art.

๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ is a non-linear experimental documentary exploring the unsolved murder of Sydney anti-development campaigner and glamourous style icon Juanita Nielsen in Kings Cross in 1975. Juanitaโ€™s body has never been found and her murderers have never been charged.

Be immersed in Zanny Begg's ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ โ€“ now on display at the Art Gallery at Royal Park with free entry.

๐ŸŽป From Bach to Paganini, experience the music of a master violinist surrounded by the stories of the QVMAG collection.

Peter Tanfieldโ€™s career has taken him from studying with legendary violinists, including Yehudi Menuhin, Igor Ozim and Herman Krebbers, to performing across Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East.

An internationally acclaimed violinist, Peter has performed with major orchestras across the globe and held significant teaching and artistic leadership roles in Australia and overseas.

His work in Tasmania reflects his commitment to nurturing musical excellence and community engagement through performance and education. Peter has taught at the University of Tasmaniaโ€™s Conservatorium of Music and served as Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Senior Youth Orchestra and the Derwent Symphony Orchestra.

Wit, imagination and impeccable craftsmanship โœจ Meet Gray Street Workshop artist Sue Lorraine.

"My practice revolves around my relationship with objects and their potential and power to hold and to assign meaning and memory.

"I strive to make work that is personal but with a degree of abstraction, work that is sometimes wearable, sometimes not, sometimes solid, other times fragile, often small, on occasions large, always thoughtful, never rushed and made with skill and refinement.

"My creative process is rather fluid, where I start and where I end up is not always an obvious trajectory; itโ€™s more a journey, straying and meandering along a curious and winding path. Sometimes I start with an idea, sometimes I start with an object or artifactโ€ฆsometimes the starting point is just a doodle, other times itโ€™s a fully formed vision of the piece.

"The bottom line is that I just love making thingsโ€ฆobjects, artifacts and jewellery. I enjoy the stories they hold and the stories they can tell, the stories they evoke and the stories they conceal."
