SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOP 🎉

✂️ CUT, PASTE, & PRINT: A Matisse Adventure🎨

Looking for a creative school holiday activity that is bold, colourful, and actually results in something useful?

Join us at Curlew Arts for a two-day student art workshop inspired by the playful paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse.

Across two 2-hour sessions, students will “draw with scissors,” cutting bright papers into wiggly plants, bouncy blobs, flowing lines and wild abstract shapes. They’ll use these designs to explore colour, pattern and composition before turning their favourite shapes into custom stamps.

Then comes the best bit: printing their own design onto a canvas tote bag to take home and use. Art for the wall is lovely. Art you can carry snacks in? Elite.

This workshop includes:

Metamorphosis 🦋✨

Join us at Curlew Arts for a 3-hour printmaking workshop exploring layered texture, delicate butterfly imagery, and refined mixed-media details.

Using found fabrics, lace, textured surfaces, precision masking, image transfer, watercolour pencils, and Posca pens, you’ll build richly layered prints where butterflies appear to rest lightly across the surface.

🪶 Feathers on the Gel Plate — a small-group printmaking workshop with Curlew Arts

Turn found feathers into beautiful, layered, professional-grade prints in this intimate 3-hour workshop at Curlew Arts, Malanda.

Using the wonderfully versatile gel plate, you’ll explore feather textures through negative impressions, soft ghost prints, and refined pencil work to create a personal series of artworks with depth, detail and story.

Bring feathers you’ve collected from a favourite walk, garden or memorable place, or simply come ready to experiment. All materials are provided.

Pure magic from our recent felting workshops! 🌸🐝
I’m so excited to share some of the incredible work from our latest students at Curlew Arts. We spent the last few weeks diving deep into the world of wool, using a mix of wet felting and dry needle techniques to bring these wildflower landscapes to life.

The process is such a journey—we started by carefully layering loose, colorful fibers, then moved on to the muscle work of agitating the wool with warm soapy water. Once we had our base, the students picked up their fine needles to add more intricate details.

From spotted mushrooms to the littlest buzzing bees, you can really feel the joy in these pieces. Some of them have so much texture and energy they’re practically spilling right over the edges of the frames!
Art students, you were an absolute joy to teach. Seeing your individual styles emerge through the wool was the highlight of my week.

You should be so proud of the beautiful work you’ve produced! 💙

Each one is sewn in our studio using a print of the original Curlew artwork by Hanna Wood, which hangs in the shop. They’re made in small batches, not mass produced.

Curlew Arts began as a simple idea — to create a beautiful, welcoming space for art in Far North Queensland while building a sustainable creative livelihood. The website is the next step in that journey.

There’s a unique magic in watching a garden scene emerge—starting with the soft whisper of fiber during the wet felting process, then bringing it to life with fine needle-felted details. Between the gentle piano music and the warm conversation, it was the perfect way to spend a few hours.❤️

Creative magic happened over the weekend! We had a fantastic day partnering with Tablelands Regional Council for our Gel Plate Monoprinting session. It was so inspiring to watch everyone dive into the process—there was so much risk-taking, sharing of ideas, and pure creative joy in the room!
