Channel Museum, Margate, Tasmania The Channel Museum showcases the cultural heritage of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel region.

The Channel Museum features permanent, pop-up, and temporary exhibits that showcase Aboriginals (Oyster Cove), early exploration, timber, boat building, fruit growing, fishing, sport, churches, transport, the 1967 bushfires, militaria, and general domestic life. We have a scale model of a whaleboat, displaying whaling equipment in perfect detail. Our depiction of a school room, shop, and colonial-

style rooms (kitchen, bedroom, laundry, stable/dairy and workshop) display aspects of everyday life in the past. The Electrona Carbide Works is unique in Australia and has its own display. There are specialty displays comprising the Don Norton Camera Collection and two rooms depicting the home life of Dutch migrants in the 1950s. A collection of vintage farming machinery, housed in a separate exhibition space, is an ongoing project. The Waldie Reading Room is a library where visitors can research local and family history or simply browse our extensive collection of books, folders, maps, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

Help us tell the story of the 1967 Bushfires

Do you have stories, photographs or memorabilia from the 1967 Tasmanian bushfires?

Kingborough Council and the Channel Museum are seeking community contributions for a commemorative exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the 1967 bushfires, opening at the Kingborough Community Hub on 5 February 2027.

We're inviting community members to share their personal experiences as part of a video interview series that will be featured in the exhibition. If you lived through the fires, helped with the recovery effort, or have a family connection to the event, we'd love to hear from you.

The video interviews will be respectfully filmed by members of Youth Action Kingborough (YAK), helping preserve these important stories for future generations.

We're also looking for photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, personal keepsakes and other artefacts connected to the bushfires to help create a meaningful record of this significant chapter in our region's history.

This exhibition will provide an opportunity for reflection, learning and remembrance as we mark this important anniversary together.

Friends of Bruny Island Qarantine Station invitation.
Following on from the last Night at the Museum presentation, there will be a get together on Sunday August 23 at the station at 11 am for all those who are interested in the preservation of our heritage.
There will be drinks and food available, a discussion of the future plans and a tour around. A fun time for all.

The increase is due to running costs such as electricity: the museum is staffed entirely by volunteers.

We now have prints of David’s paintings available for purchase at the museum. They are available in two sizes. If we reach a point where a particular print is out of stock we can order another one for you.
It is worth perusing the prints as David has included some that are in addition to those in his exhibition.

Channel Museum visit proves an interesting trip back in time for Rotary Club of Kingston members.

Andrew Tomes vice president of the Channel Museum at Margate gave Rotary club member's a terrific tour of the museum and spoke about the great work that’s happening there to keep people of all ages in touch with the history of the Channel area.

The museum has a variety of permanent displays that provide insights into cultural, social, artistic and industrial life of Channel pioneers, a great library, camera collection, an Aboriginal display, an interesting collection of vintage farm machinery and much more.

If you’re looking for something to do visit the beautifully curated and professionally presented museum at Margate and take a tour with a friendly local volunteer.

The museum welcomes tour groups, traveler’s, individuals and school groups.
