Music at McClelland | Rubiks + Gian Slater

Join us on Sunday 20 September for an afternoon of adventurous contemporary music with Rubiks, one of Melbourne’s most dynamic contemporary art music ensembles, featuring special guest Gian Slater.

Directed by Tamara Kohler and Kaylie Melville, Rubiks brings together new music, improvisation and bold cross-disciplinary collaborations, reimagining classical music for today.

Acclaimed vocalist and composer Gian Slater joins the ensemble, bringing her distinctive approach to wordless singing, improvisation, songwriting, electronics and contemporary composition. With eight albums and an impressive list of collaborations and awards, Gian is a leading voice in Australia’s contemporary music scene.

Experience something a little different and discover live contemporary music in the beautiful surrounds of McClelland.

It was fantastic to see so many of you join us for an inspiring artist talk with local artist Christopher Pyett with our senior curator, Suzette Wearne.

With six decades of artistic practice behind him, Christopher shared a wonderful wealth of knowledge and generously gave us an insight into his creative journey, his approach to colour and the stories behind his exhibition, Years of Colour.

A big thank you to Christopher for sharing his experience and insights, and to everyone who came along and helped make the afternoon such a wonderful conversation.

If you haven’t yet visited Christopher Pyett: Years of Colour, there’s still time! The exhibition is on display at McClelland until 25 October.

What might look like an ordinary building or forgotten corner of a street becomes something much more intriguing through Alison Tedesco’s eyes. From her Frankston studio, she transforms these everyday places into detailed miniatures.

Earlier this year, we had the privilege of visiting Alison in her studio, where we were able to see works in progress and experience firsthand how the tiniest details gradually come together to create her incredibly detailed scenes.

Alison’s fascination with the stories held within buildings, streets and the traces of lives lived there is at the heart of Alison Tedesco: Street Stories.

Come and see the finished works for yourself at McClelland until 25 October.

Get ready for some wild school holiday fun as Funky Farm returns to McClelland this September and October with their wonderful wildlife talks for kids and families. Come up close with some fascinating Australian native animals, including reptiles, mammals and sometimes birds.

The Funky Farm team will introduce you to the animals of the day, sharing fun facts and stories before giving you the chance to meet, pat and even hold some of these incredible creatures.

When: Wednesday 23 September 2026 + Friday 2 October 2026
Time: 10:30–11:30am
Bookings: https://events.humanitix.com/funky-farm-at-mcclelland-september
Children aged 2+ will need a ticket to attend.

Places are capped to ensure everyone has a special experience and, most importantly, to support the welfare of the animals, so bookings are essential.

And don’t worry about the weather! If it’s particularly hot or raining, Funky Farm will move indoors.

Perfect for curious little wildlife lovers and families looking for something a little different these school holidays!
