55 Million Years Ago Interactive Eocene fossil experience and fine art gallery located in Murgon, Queensland Previously unknown creatures? In Murgon? Who knew?

In the late 1980’s, fossils found near Boat Mountain just outside Murgon in Southern Queensland rocked the palaeontology world. 15 new fossil species discovered here were found to be 55 million years old, predating any other Eocene period fossils found in Australia by 20 million years. Although tiny in comparison to the bones of dinosaurs and megafauna in western Queenslan

d the Murgon fossils were found to be much older than the Eocene fossils previously found in Riversleigh, fossils that until this date were known to be the oldest fossils recorded in Australia. One group that did know, and subsequently made it their mission for the world to know, was the Murgon Creative Country Association, a volunteer based, not for profit organisation that have literally moved mountains to raise the necessary funds to bring the Fossil Experience to life. Not content with celebrating their Eocene origins, the organisation determined a Fine Art Gallery could act as a launch pad for artists in their community at the same time offering art workshops and activities supporting cultural connection, health, and wellbeing. 🌿🦴 Did you know that Murgon, QLD is home to some of Australia's oldest known fossils?
In the late 1980s, remarkable fossil discoveries near Boat Mountain revealed 15 previously unknown species dating back an incredible 55 million years, shocking the palaeontology world, proving to be 20 million years older than any other Eocene fossils previously found in Australia.
Today, that extraordinary story is being shared at 55 Million Years Ago a unique attraction brought to life through an interactive experience.

These budding young archaeologists had a great time uncovering our Thylacoleo in the fossil dig pit after exploring the art gallery and museum. Their Grandma enjoyed a well earned seat on the patio of our prehistoric garden and gave wonderful encouragement and guidance during the exploration! 🙌👏 Here at 55 Million Years Ago we love to see the kids interacting, exploring and working together to discover the hidden secrets of our Murgon, QLD fossil experience.
