‘Sunburn: Gerwyn Davies’ is a love letter to Tweed and the borderlands – a declaration of deep affection for the lurid, the leisurely and the lowbrow.

In photographic artist and costume maker Gerwyn Davies’s new work ‘Meter maid’ 2026, Davies continues an ongoing exploration of self-representation, the spectacle of camp, and the powerful potentials of q***r in/visibility. Combining a love for costume-making, slickly staged scenes and performative photography, Davies brilliantly reimagines a well-known Gold Coast icon, transforming into the newest member of the famed Surfers Paradise cohort.

‘Sunburn: Gerwyn Davies’ continues until 22 November 2026

A Tweed Regional Gallery initiative. The Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence studio is supported by benefactor Mr Tim Fairfax AC via the Tweed Regional Gallery Foundation Ltd.

Closing this weekend!

Step inside the creative world of one of Australia’s most beloved artists. ‘In the Making: the art of Margaret Olley’ features a rare collection of paintings showcasing Olley’s artistic process in action. We can see the painter’s workings in chalk and layers of underpaint – her building blocks. And through these works in progress, we also grasp something about her concerns with placement, shape, colour, balance, and the importance light played in her paintings.

As she said, ‘It’s no use to begin painting substantially until the positions of the objects are right; for instance, moving that jug over, feeling my way around…and if I lose momentum, that’s when I set it aside, put it out of sight for a fresh look later…’ (Margaret Olley in Pearce, B (2012), Margaret Olley, Roseville: The Beagle Press, p.118).

Until Sunday 6 September 2026

Congratulations to Pascale Bardos for winning the 2026 WAA Emerging Artist Award for her stoneware work ‘Holding time!' ☝️🌟

Judge Professor Lisa Slade said “In 'Holding Time' two colossal, earth-bound vessels enact their title, that is, they hold time in their ancient bodies that were made just this year, with the artist choosing not to fire the clay. Not only do they hold time, but they become time. Here is a practice that is materially and conceptually brave, and in risk, we find reward.”

The $5,000 Emerging Artist Award is supported by Leanne & Greg Tong-Lyon.

Congratulations to Lismore-based Gomeroi artist Penny Evans for winning the 2026 WAA Bundjalung Award with her textile wall-based work 'dhurrubuu – FollowMe'. ☝️🌟

Judge Professor Lisa Slade said “In this winning wall-based work Penny Evans steps from her well-known practice in clay into textiles. Titled 'dhurrubuu' which translates to mean ‘follow me’ she alerts us to the risks of disinformation in today’s world and enlivens us to the potency of old Knowledge, held on Country. In the artist’s own words: 'This work can be read like a liturgical banner. The patterns are instructions referencing dendroglyphs requiring pattern recognition in the landscape'.”

The $10,000 WAA Bundjalung Award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists includes a solo exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery in 2027, and is sponsored by the Tweed Regional Gallery Foundation Ltd.
