Bondi Beach, first light.

There’s something about Bondi in the early hours. The atmosphere, the light, the stillness before the day gets going. One of those places that seems to photograph itself.

Yosemite. El Capitan.

I’m not going to lie, getting here was hard. A once in a hundred years blizzard in mid-March wasn’t exactly what we had planned.

We imagined blue skies, sunshine and perfection. Instead, we got something I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I look at these photographs and my heart skips a beat. Sometimes they bring tears to my eyes. I can’t really explain why, but I know what I felt standing there, and somehow, these photographs bring it all back.

I’ve always believed things happen for a reason.

Sometimes, the photographs you never planned to take are the ones that mean the most.

Yosemite Valley

This place has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, inspired by the incredible Ansel Adams and his iconic black and white photographs of Yosemite.

When we arrived and the valley was completely covered in low-lying cloud, my heart broke a little. But on our last day, we made a last-minute decision to head back for one more look. Hoping the clouds might part, even just for a moment, we got lucky. And boy, was I smiling.

Watched the sun dip, watched the shadows grow long, watched people move through both. Noticed all of it, the way I always do.

Light doing what it does at the end of the day, turning ordinary things a little theatrical for just a moment.

Almost missed the Land Rover entirely. Caught it on reflex, no time to think about the shot and I think it’s better for it. Some of the best ones happen when you stop trying to plan them.

A walk through the national park as the sun goes down, nothing more planned than that.

Watched the light do the whole thing. Bright, then gold, then gone and it does so quite quickly here.

I watched the rocks go from grey to black, the water following not far behind. A woman stood on the sand with her board, watching the same thing I was.

The art of just noticing.

That particular shade of turquoise that makes your heart skip a beat.

A woman walking the shoreline alone. A surfboard carried past an old apartment tower that’s clearly seen a few decades of summers. Girls wading in, boards under arm, waves doing exactly what they’re supposed to. Someone surfing a clean little wave.

And somewhere in between all of it, a quiet little detail nobody else would’ve stopped for, because that’s usually where the good stuff is.

Just another day of paying attention.
