I still remember being struck by the sight of the full moon rising through the white spans of the North Bourke Bridge. It was one of those beautiful moments that made me stop and take it all in.

The soft violet evening sky gave the familiar bridge an almost magical quality, while the moon glowed quietly above the landscape.

The North Bourke Bridge is such an iconic part of Bourke, and I wanted to capture not only the landmark itself, but the stunning view created by that particular evening light. 💜🖼

I have always loved the feeling of watching a storm build across the Outback. There is a real thrill in seeing the sky darken and wondering what the clouds will bring.

In ‘Indigo Storm Approaching Black Soil Plains’, the deep indigo sky creates a striking contrast against the sunlit yellow grass below. The whole landscape seems to be waiting as the storm draws closer. 💙🖼

It is a sight many of us in the bush know well. That sudden change in the light, the excitement in the air and the hope that rain may be on its way.

There is something awe-inspiring about an Outback view that seems to stretch on forever.

In ‘Blue Distance from Mt Oxley to Mt Gundabooka’, the rich red earth reaches towards the soft blue shapes on the distant horizon. 🩵🖼

A lone tree stands against the open sky, giving a sense of just how vast and beautiful this country is.

High above, wedge-tailed eagles soar freely across the blue. To me, they capture the wonderful feeling of freedom that comes with standing beneath such an enormous Outback sky.

I think there is a special kind of peace found beside the Darling River, where the water is still and the trees offer cool shade from the Outback sun.

In ‘Shades of Green on Darling River', an old gum stands firmly on the riverbank, its roots reaching into the earth and its branches stretching across the water. The gentle greens and blues give the scene a feeling of calm, assurance and steadfastness. 💚🖼

It is a familiar sight for those who know river country, a quiet place to pause, breathe and feel grounded.

There is something joyful about travelling through the country early in the morning, just as the first light begins to warm the landscape.

In ‘Yellow Morning Sun Through Coolibah Country’, the rising sun shines through the branches of an old coolibah, filling the scene with soft golden light. 💛🖼

Drovers are an important part of Bourke’s history and the dust kicked up by the sheep that the drover is herding seems to make the paddock glow.

It is a familiar sight for anyone who has spent an early morning on an Outback road. The cool air, the long shadows and that beautiful moment when the sunlight first appears through the trees.

There is something both dramatic and exciting about watching an Outback dust storm roll across the country. The sky turns orange, and the distance begins to disappear.

In ‘Orange Dust Storm’, birds sweep through the dusty sky while the trees slowly fade into the haze. 🧡🖼

It is a scene many people who live in the bush will recognise, the rising dust and the anticipation of what is coming.

And tucked quietly into the foreground is a small bearded dragon, watching and waiting as the storm approaches. See if you can spot him.

One of the things I love about living in the Outback is how quickly an ordinary evening can turn into something spectacular.

In ‘Sunset over Red Gidgee Plains’, deep reds sweep across the clouds and seem to spill onto the earth below. ❤️🖼

The winding track draws you through the gidgee country, beneath a sky filled with colour and movement.

For me, this first panel of Bourke: A Vision Splendid captures excitement, drama and delight.

It is the kind of sunset many of us in the bush know well. Bold, glowing and impossible not to stop and admire.

“Bourke: A Vision Splendid” is a seven-panelled artwork depicting the rugged beauty of the Bourke Shire. I painted it at a time when the town, and many people throughout the district, were suffering through the hardships of the 2000–2007 drought.

The rainbow has long been a sign of hope, so I chose to represent Bourke in the colours of the rainbow. 🌈🖼

It was not only a way to express this wonderfully inspiring landscape, but also to encourage the people of Bourke and offer hope for the future.

The seven panels connect through one continuous horizon line, with each one representing a different aspect of the Bourke Shire:

• Sunset over Red Gidgee Plains
• Orange Dust Storm
• Yellow Morning Sun Through Coolibah Country
• Shades of Green on Darling River
• Blue Distance from Mt Oxley to Mt Gundabooka
• Indigo Storm Approaching Black Soil Plains

🌈 This is a particularly significant photo.🌈

Although this artwork has been hanging on a wall at Bourke Shire Council for 19 years, it has never been photographed in it's completion with the artist beside it.

19 years later, artist Jenny Greentree explains the circumstances surrounding the hanging of "Bourke: A Vision Splendid".

"Six months after the commissioning of an artwork to represent the Bourke Shire, I had painted Vision Splendid and my husband Steve who framed the 7 panels, hung them in their particular arrangement in the foyer of Bourke Shire Council.

It was a Friday afternoon when the Council doors had closed for the week, so we decided to get "official" photos later. That weekend, Steve had a stroke. He was airlifted to RPA Hospital in Sydney and thankfully, eventually, made a complete recovery. ✈️🩺

Naturally, a photo with the recently hung artwork, was not a priority in the recovery stages that followed and life moved on.

This year, as we celebrate 20 years of Back O Bourke Gallery, we acknowledge that "Bourke: A Vision Splendid" was and is an important part of our journey. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🩷

So here, we are, the artist and the framer, with the "official" photo alongside the Bourke Shire Artwork, commissioned 20 years ago."
