Our latest blog is now live 📣

In 2006, the Alfred Webb Cup came down to a single point.

Thirty NSW Fire Brigades teams, plus visitors from Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand, descended on Port Macquarie for a State Championship that closed out more than a century of history, the last Hose Reel and Hose Cart events ever run at Championships, before Casino edged out Kelso 84 points to 83 for the closest Cup finish on record.

Our Championship historian John Hand takes you back to that week on the blog. From the torchlight procession, a father-and-son Hose & Hydrant win, and the changeover from threaded couplings to Storz fittings.

This week we're changing it up a bit and taking a look at the closed Hamilton Fire Station. Formed in 1888, the Hamilton Fire Brigade was incorporated into the new Lambton Fire Station alongside the Lambton and New Lambton Fire Brigades in 2016.

It's time for another , and this time we're going back to 1975.

Installed in 1975, the Jaws of Life were intended to be used at an accident before the arrival of other rescue squads, which were the NSW Police and NSW Ambulance at this time. The first three sets were known as the Enerpac Rescue Set and were installed at Blacktown, Hornsby, and Miranda Fire Stations. They were used primarily for releasing people from the remains of vehicles after a car accident by using either the 10-tonne ram to re-shape distorted metal, or the one-tonne force of the spreader to open jammed doors. The Enerpac units would prove to be useful to the NSWFB (now Fire and Rescue NSW) during the 1977 Granville Train disaster and highlighted to need to for standarised rescue equipment across all emergency services.

Did you guess yesterday's ?

It was the 1929 Ahrens Fox!

The Ahrens Fox is one of the most distinctive fire engines on display in the Museum and was purchased by the NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB, now Fire and Rescue NSW) in December 1928 to replace the aging 'Big Ben' Shand Mason Steamer. Coming into service in 1929, the Ahrens Fox could pump over 4,500 litres per minute.

The NSWFB decided to retire the Ahrens for good in the 1960s and approached the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) to donate the vehicle to them. Despite initial hesitations, it entered into their collection until 1979, when the newly formed NSW Fire Service Museum (now the Museum of Fire) acquired the Ahrens Fox and after major refurbishment in 1981, became a star attraction at the Museum where it remains today. It was later put on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2004.
