Exploring the complexities of women’s lives in pre-Civil War Spain, Eva Fernandez’s ‘Renegade Women’ series confronts women’s suffrage and historical erasure. Through found portrait photographs, personal archives and family letters, these works weave a powerful feminist counter-narrative.

Centring women on the threshold of modernity, the photographs foreshadow an aggressive recontainment of freedoms, as well the endurance and dignity that persisted despite this. Drawing from letters written to her mother by her parents after her mother’s migration from Spain, Fernandez embroiders language of obligation and shame onto these images, transforming them into a feminist reclamation of strength, memory and identity.

A compelling statement on this series written by Eva Fernandez can be found on our website. We welcome you to view these powerful works in-person before ‘Renegade Women’ draws to a close this Saturday, March 21st.

Today we say farewell to The Honourable Paul Guest OAM QC. Paul was an Olympic rower, a QC, then Judge of the Family Court, but also a passionate art collector, friend to many artists as well as a loyal supporter and advocate of gallerists like me. Though his physical visits to Gallerysmith petered off in recent years, he would occasionally call to sing the praises of an artist I was exhibiting or just to remind me, in his unmistakable voice, that I was ‘doing a terrific job’. This incredible pencil and charcoal portrait by Ted May, another of the 39ers, hangs proudly and dominantly in Owen Dixon Chambers. It offers a wonderful insight into both artist and sitter (who were friends for many decades) and remains one of my favourite portraits of all time. Vale Paul.

More than 70% of the artists Gallerysmith represents are women, and we offer each of them a platform which fully supports their exploration of identity. By foregrounding lived experience through their work, our artists are given space to challenge, reflect and contribute to a cultural dialogue that values visibility and agency.

For International Women’s Day, we bring bring together strong voices of many of our women artists in our online exhibition: WOMANIFESTO, headlined by this highly charged diptych by Lori Pensini. I AM ENOUGH, an oil with found object diptych oscillates between declarative and interrogative. We invite you to respond….
