Q Bank Gallery

Q Bank Gallery is an artists in residence space and gallery on the ground floor of an old bank building. And AirBnb rental property upstairs.

Q Bank Gallery is run by a group of friends who fell in love with Queenstown and its old bank building. Previously the building’s owner lived upstairs and the downstairs was rented as a gallery and artist residency (known as “the Bank Annex”) to LARQ. When we took over the building in 2015, LARQ had already moved out of the gallery, but we took up the baton to provide a space for artists-in-reside

nce in Queenstown. Virginia Woolf says that artists need a room of their own to create art. We’ve taken it one step further, providing a temporary “Gallery of One’s Own” for artists. Artists typically stay for a month and have a show of their work at the end of their residency. The goal of the gallery is to provide a friendly, respectful space where artists are able to enter into a two-way dialogue (consciously or unconsciously) with Queenstown’s community and environment. Upstairs is rented out on AirBnB, with its own separate entrance and stairs. But AirBnB guests are encouraged to visit the gallery to see the artists’ work.

Welcome to our September artist in residency, Michael Fee (Mike)

Michael is an artist based in Narm/Melbourne. Working primarily in paint, ceramics and textiles his work plays colourfully in the space between sincerity and irony.

Making work frenetically and impatiently Michael is interested in identities of so called Australia, the thin veil of civility inside a colonial project, how the stories and myths we create, recreate us in turn. This is the point from which his work often begins, a contradiction that renders excess energy, energy that transmutes into painting - full with humour, sometimes aggression and often confusion.

Michael’s family have a long history in Queenstown and the West Coast although he has never lived here, his father was born here and his grandparents and uncles have lived in area all his life. Michael is interested in how this familiar yet foreign geography will enter his work. Michael comes to Queenstown and Q bank with his partner Alice and 6-month old child Cosi. If you see them in the gallery or around town, please pop your head in or say hello.

Our second artist in residency this month - joining Dion Parker look at us with two great artist for the lovely August weather

Gday there from Qbank, Queenstown! My name is Steve Gorman - Steve - and I’m lucky enough to spend the next four weeks as an artist in residence at qbank. I’m a self taught oil painter, and hope to paint some of the landscapes and scenes from around the area. It’s a unique and colourful landscape around here which will get me reaching for some new colours and angles to use in my painting. Thanks for having me stay QBank, loving it.

From our current resident - Dion Parker - welcome back. Hey Queenstown! I’m stoked to be back here at QBank again. I was first here in 2023 and loved the place so much I knew I had to come back.
My practice is pretty varied.
While I’m here I’ll be making some small sculptures using timber from the local sawmill and spending time writing some stories I’ve wanted to tell for quite some time. If you are in the area and feel like dropping in you are very welcome.

A hearty somewhat delayed welcome to our July artist in residency - Jordan Wood Hello Queenstown! I am Jordan, current artist in residence at Q Bank Gallery. The immensity of the West Coast is unsuppressable, expansive and ever-shifting. Time takes a different pace in the shorter days on ancient lands. One week in, only scratching the surface.

I have come here to make a 10m long collage, where perceived histories, bodily responses to landscape and ideas around extraction are strung together. Ceramic masks, hands, small sculptures have also emerged.

Drawing upon personal and collective experiences, my work collates movements and responses as caught in the body, traversing the spaces between histories and fictions, artifacts and debris, questioning what we conceal and allow exposed. My mother’s family worked in these mines and she has spent years trying to unravel her ancestry. I am here to listen and record my responses to this surreal, extraordinary space. Please drop by for a tea if around and about - it would be lovely to chat.

Introducing - our June artist in residence. Welcome Kurt to our amazing little town. …. Hi there, my name is Kurt Sorensen and I’m the current artist in residence a Q Bank. I’m based in Sydney but currently a PhD candidate at UTAS school of art. My research based practice examines how photography critically reckons with the persistence of colonial aesthetics in representations of the Australian landscape. Through storytelling, historical texts and photographic processes I explore how colonial narratives and images framed the landscape as antagonistic, malevolent, or psychologically destabilising. The work also reflects ethical implications of my position as a European‑descended photographer engaging with a landscape shaped by colonial violence, erasure, and layered with historical echoes.

Warm welcome to our April artist in residence,

Maria is an artist based in Melbourne, with Russian and New Zealand backgrounds.

Her drawing practice, which focuses on narrative portraiture, shares a close kinship with creative writing - both construct imagined and compelling characters that exist in fictional worlds. Each work suggests a wider narrative; but rather than laying out the story as a novel might, it leaves space for the viewer to experience it on an emotional level.

While in Q Bank, Maria is hoping to put a start to an existing idea she has for a new series, however also wanting to incorporate time to experiment with some drawing techniques and is open to going off-course completely.

Welcome to - our March 2026 artist in residency. Shannah Mitchell is an artist working out of Perth, Western Australia.
Her practise experiments with traditional painting techniques to explore contemporary subjects and settings, highlighting moments, interactions and beauty. Proposing that these techniques experiences constitute the essence of existence.
Using mostly oils on canvas, she attempts to depict outcomes of transient effects, such as light, atmosphere and time of day onto underlying structure and solid form. Rejoining the transient and permanent and seeking out the drama of this interaction. Reflecting an ongoing schism between romantic and classical tendencies in painting that have existed throughout the history or art.

Welcoming our February artist in residence. Christopher Myles. Chris Henderson is an artist working in Melbourne/Naarm. His practice moves between drawing, painting, murals and kinetic sculpture, and is grounded in lived experience, storytelling and close attention to social and cultural environments.

Much of Henderson’s work begins with familiar, everyday symbols and uses them as entry points into more complex conversations about place, identity and social pressure. He is particularly interested in how stories are formed around young people, especially in regional contexts, and how those narratives are repeated, simplified or distorted over time.

His work is intuitive, materially driven and often process-led, allowing time, repetition and chance to play an active role in shaping meaning.
