We tasted modernity… and it tasted like Beaujolais, Champagne, and macarons.

For the final of our The University of Melbourne Deep Dive lecture series, we were delighted by a lively discussion led by Professor Jacqueline Dutton exploring the fascinating gastronomic history of France, covering everything from the clever marketing of a tyre company that birthed the Michelin Guide to the ‘appellation’ that protects Champagne’s champagne from other sparkling interlopers. And all of this was brought to aromatic, delicious life by the day’s event partner, The Vault, with their impeccable canapés and paired wines.

Thank you to all who joined us for a sunny winter’s day spent tasting the past and delving deeper into world of ‘Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso’.

FINAL WEEK | Fran O'Neill: On The Move + Tully Moore: SAM Soccer Academy

This is your final week to enjoy the luminous abstract canvases of Fran O'Neill: On the Move and the football fanaticism of Tully Moore's 'SAM Soccer Academy' in the SAM Children's Gallery before they close on Sunday 9 August.

In our newest episode of the SAM Talks: In the Studio podcast, SAM Curator – Exhibitions & Collections, Caroline Esbenshade, visits 2026 SAM Selects artist Fran O’Neill at her home and studio in Victoria’s High Country.⁠

Surrounded by the landscape that informs the light, movement and atmosphere of her work, O’Neill reflects on her journey as a painter, from growing up in Wangaratta and studying in Melbourne, to a seven-week painting course in New York that became a twenty-year chapter of her life.⁠

Over half an hour, the pair explore colour as a relationship, the importance of risk and experimentation, and the determination required to continue making work in the face of criticism and self-doubt. ⁠

Hosted in partnership with The Vault Shepparton and University of Melbourne, this session led by Professor Jacqueline Dutton will lead you on a journey through the fascinating history of French food and wine.

Enjoy canapés and paired wines whilst you discover how the phylloxera crisis reshaped the wine industry, why the Michelin Guide changed the way people travelled and dined, and how terroir—the taste of place—became central to French identity.

Sensory & low vision-friendly exhibition viewing sessions | 29 July + 12 August

Designed to support visitors who prefer a calmer experience, including people with vision impairment or sensory needs, these early viewing sessions of 'Facing Modernity: Degas to Picasso' provides a quieter, low-sensory environment and higher light levels for increased visibility so all visitors can participate in art experiences.

During the session, visitors can listen along to audio guides, discover texture and form with sensory kits, or access the text through large-print versions of the labels.
