Samson Bonson in conjunction with Maningrida Arts & Culture

Samson Bonson is a Gurrgoni sculptor from western Arnhem Land who was taught by renowned artist Crusoe Kurddal. Best known for his finely carved lorrkon (hollow log) sculptures, Bonson’s work is distinguished by intricate pointillist decoration and exceptional craftsmanship.

Drawing on the ceremonial traditions
of Arnhem Land, his sculptures honour ancestral knowledge while demonstrating a refined contemporary sculptural practice. Bonson’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in the collection of the British Museum.

Emily Kame Kngwarreye (Kam Kngwarray)

Emily Kame Kngwarreye was a senior Anmatyerr artist from Alhalker in the Utopia region of Central Australia. After more than a decade working in batik, she began painting on canvas in the late 1980s, producing an extraordinary body of work over just eight years. Her practice evolved from intricate dotted compositions to the bold, gestural paintings of her final years, reflecting a lifetime of cultural knowledge and an enduring connection to her Country.

Kngwarreye described her paintings as “whole lot”- an all-encompassing expression of Dreaming, native plants, animals and the interconnected cycles of the natural world. Her work bridges cultural knowledge and contemporary abstraction, establishing her as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.

Carol Puruntatameri in conjunction with Munupi Aboriginal Arts

Carol Puruntatameri is a Tiwi artist from Pirlangimpi on Melville Island. Her practice is grounded in Tiwi cultural knowledge, drawing on family stories, ceremony and ancestral traditions passed down through generations. Working across bark, canvas and found objects, she combines natural ochres with a confident contemporary visual language.

Yipali and Purrukupali tells one of the central creation stories of the Tiwi people. The story explains the origins of death and the Pukumani (mourning) ceremony, one of the most significant cultural traditions of the Tiwi Islands.

Bugai Whyoulter in conjunction with Martumili Artists

Bugai Whyoulter is a senior Kartujarra
custodian of the lands around Kunawarritji (Canning Stock Route Well 33). Raised travelling, hunting and learning on Country across the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) region and
the Canning Stock Route, her deep
cultural knowledge continues to shape
her practice.

Encouraged to paint by renowned artists Nora Nungabar and Nora Wompi, Bugai has developed a distinctive visual language celebrated for its mastery of colour, gesture and atmosphere. Her paintings evoke the vast landscapes of the Western Desert through nuanced fields of colour and expressive brushwork.

Final week to experience Féth Fíada, Emily Ebbs’ latest exhibition at Art Leven.

Drawing on ideas of mist, landscape, memory and transformation, Ebbs works across acrylic, oil, charcoal, ash and natural pigments to create paintings where process is as significant as the finished work.

To mark the final day of the exhibition, join us in the gallery for an Artist in Conversation with Emily Ebbs, as we explore the ideas behind Féth Fíada, her materials and the processes that shape her practice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday evening for the opening of Féth Fíada by Emily Ebbs.

It was wonderful to see the gallery filled with so many familiar and new faces as we celebrated a body of work that rewards slow looking and quiet reflection.

The exhibition continues until 22 August, so if you joined us on opening night but didn't quite get the chance to linger with the paintings-or if you couldn't make it at all-we'd love to welcome you to the gallery. Féth Fíada is an exhibition that reveals itself over time, inviting a quieter encounter with each visit.

Join us to celebrate the opening of Féth Fíada, a new exhibition by Gadigal-based artist Emily Ebbs.

Developed during her Cloudstone Residency in lutruwita (Tasmania), this new body of work draws inspiration from the Irish folklore of féth fiada—the magical druid mist said to offer protection through sacred concealment.

Combining acrylic, oil, charcoal, ash and pigments gathered from the landscape, Ebbs creates paintings that exist between presence and absence, ritual and landscape. Allowing the elements to become collaborators in the making of each work, her practice invites us to consider our own relationship with the natural world and the quiet mystery of mist.

The Utopia region lies on Anmatyerr and Alyawarr Country, approximately 250 kilometres north-east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Spread across 16 homelands, it is home to one of Australia's most significant painting traditions.

For generations, artists have drawn upon ancestral narratives, important places, seasonal knowledge and lived experience, creating works that speak to enduring relationships with place and the knowledge held within it.

The region has produced some of Australia's most celebrated artists, including Emily Kam Kngwarreye, whose influence continues to resonate across generations of painters today.

While each artist works in a distinctive manner, they remain connected through shared cultural knowledge and deep connections to their homelands. Together, these works offer insight into a tradition that is both profoundly ancient and deeply contemporary.

As senior artist Joyce Pitjara Jones explains:

"We're keeping our generations stronger, through knowledge on our land."

Artist Spotlight | Lucky Morton Kngwarreye

"We were living bush at Ngkwarlananim. No car. Walking to Amaroo with swags. I was carrying the billy can when I was a young girl."

Lucky Morton Kngwarreye's paintings are deeply rooted in memory, Country and the knowledge passed down through generations. Born in 1952, she grew up hunting tyape (witchetty grubs) and yerrampe (honey ants) with her family across Ngkwarlananim and Arnkawenyerr Country.

Like many of the senior Utopia women, Lucky first worked in batik before moving to canvas. Today she continues to paint Ilyarnayt, the flowering Acacia that grows throughout her Country, carrying forward stories she has painted for decades.

There is a wonderful directness to Lucky's work - paintings that speak not only of landscape, but of a life lived on and with Country.
