Mt Emerald plane crash 1990.

If you would like to pay your respects, the memorial plaque is on the corner of Kennedy Highway and Tate Road, Tolga.

Today marks 36 years since the Mt Emerald plane crash, one of the worst aviation tragedies in Far North Queensland history.

On 11 May 1990, 11 lives were lost when a Cessna travelling from Proserpine to Mareeba crashed into Mt Emerald. Among those onboard were civic leaders, councillors, council officers, a nun and pilot Stan Lindgren. They had been returning home from a local government conference.

For Cairns, we particularly remember Mayor Keith Goodwin and Alderman Rose Blank, who both served our city with passion, conviction and deep commitment to community.

A memorial plaque located at the Cairns Regional Council Chambers on Spence Street stands as a lasting reminder of the lives lost and the impact this tragedy had across the Far North.

As we celebrate Cairns’ 150th year, part of honouring our past is acknowledging not only the milestones and achievements, but also the moments of profound loss that have shaped our region and the people within it.

Today we remember those who never made it home and the families, friends and communities forever impacted by that tragedy.

Mayor Amy Eden Cairns Regional Council

Thanks to everyone who stopped in & said Hi to our volunteers at today's Living Well Expo. 😀

It was fun listening to everyone's guesses for our 'Guess the object's'. Well done to those who guessed correctly as they weren't easily identifiable things. 🧐

It was great to chat & we really appreciated all the positive feedback from the community about our museum. 🥰

And as always, a big thankyou to the volunteers who helped out & represented us today. 👏
