SLOW IS THE SUN
By Veteran, Angus Green
41RNSWR (DCOY)
RAInf.

The lonely bugle joins the sun as golden light appears..

A huddled crowd turns east to watch
the proud men, fighting tears..

As morning light cuts through the chill
the bugle plays the sound..

Our flag descends
with gentle hands-
Pausing half-way from the ground.

Each veteran feels the tremble
of the spirit of that day
When our boys charged in for glory
on the sands of Suvla Bay.

We honour not just Anzacs, we are reminded of the rest
Who throughout the flames of history
Gave and gave their very best.

The world right now is moving at a pace too hard to match

Hence why it’s so important
to mark your time and slow to catch;
A light of nations memory, shadows cast so long they’ll stay

Forever in the dawn’s first light
on this; our sacred Anzac Day.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
LEST WE FORGET ⚘️

"MARK DONALDSON VC"
Oil on canvas
* Private art collection of the Australian SASR.

This portrait of Mark Donaldson VC I did, was never about rank, medals, or citation—it was about the man behind them.
I’m drawn to stories that live beneath the surface, and in Mark’s case, it’s not just the moment of bravery that defines him, but the quiet weight that comes with it. His actions in Afghanistan—placing himself in harm’s way to protect others and bring someone home—speak to something deeply human: instinct, loyalty, and an unwavering sense of responsibility.
As someone who has long been connected to the Australian Army, I find myself continually returning to these stories—not to glorify war, but to honour the individuals within it. There’s a humility in Mark’s presence that I wanted to capture. Not a hero in the cinematic sense, but a man who simply did what needed to be done.
The inclusion of the military working dog alongside him, is deliberate. It reflects partnership, trust, and the unspoken bond that exists in these environments—something that often goes unseen but is just as vital.
This painting is about courage, yes—but more than that, it’s about character. It’s about the kind of strength that doesn’t ask to be recognised, yet leaves a lasting imprint.

"SAPPER"
Acrylic on canvas,
The first painting which started my career as a War Artist. After winning a competition on the Australian Army page, I was asked by their admin, to send in images of my art for others to view. In 2010, "Sapper" was shared and within a few hours, I was contacted by the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment and offered a job to record on canvas, service life of Sappers on deployment (in Afghanistan) and at home, on base.

I had hoped that the rain was just enough to break the drought and green things up again in Western Queensland.
My heart goes out to the farmers who've lost their livestock, homes, pets and livelihoods including the townships who've had to also, evacuate. 🥺🐂🐑🐎😔

Sad times. 😔
