Special Screening: Tim Bonython's Cinematic Ocean Journeys

As part of the Water People exhibition, Victa Cinema presents a special screening drawn from the cinematic ocean journeys of award-winning surf filmmaker Tim Bonython.

Homecoming – World Premiere
Sunday June 7, 1–2pm | Victa Cinema

A powerful cinematic collaboration between Adelaide-born composer Matt Laing and videographer Denis Smith, Homecoming captures the iconic Bluff at Encounter Bay on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Built from the musical work From Home (2020/21), the film moves through four natural themes: birds, reeds, lizard, and granite - reflecting life on the Bluff in sound and image.

After two years in the making, this original work premieres at Victa Cinema as part of the Victor Harbor Winter Whale Festival, featuring a live string performance by Alison Rayner (violin), Justin Julian (viola), and David Moran (cello).

Don’t miss this unique fusion of film, place, and live music.

🌊 Looking ahead to WATER PEOPLE 🌊

We’re excited to present Water People - a powerful group exhibition curated by Maria Ellers as part of the Victor Harbor Winter Whale Festival 🐋

Showing at Coral Street Art Space this June-July 2026, the exhibition brings together artists deeply connected to Australia’s ocean and coastal environments, featuring works by Mark Callaghan, Rita Kluge, Gerry Wedd, David C***s, John Ogden, Goompi Ugerabah, and Mark Rhodes.

A special associated event will also take place at Victa Cinema, featuring a screening of Surfing Visions by renowned surf filmmaker Tim Bonython.

Across surf and swell, reef systems, migration routes, saltwater culture, and ancestral knowledge, these artists explore lived relationships with the sea - revealing coastal environments as places of both power and vulnerability.

Timed with the seasonal arrival of Southern Right Whales along the Fleurieu coastline, Water People invites reflection on our shared responsibility to protect the ocean, while celebrating the deep creative pull of water.

Exhibition Opening – Friday 5 June 5:30pm at Coral Street Art Space – registration essential here: https://victorharbor-events.bookable.net.au/ #!/event-detail/ev_fbdadcad653a43dc93a8937dade6e72e
