Museum of the Riverina Social history museum with two sites featuring our permanent collection and temporary and travelling exhibitions

Over two sites, the Museum of the Riverina tells stories about the people and events which have helped shape Wagga Wagga and the Riverina region. We’re responsible for collecting and caring for more than 15,000 objects, photographs, textiles and paper-based materials which help to tell those stories. The Museum of the Riverina is a cultural facility of Wagga Wagga City Council.

BRUSH LETTERING WORKSHOP WITH QUILL FINE ART CREATIONS ✒️🖌️

Join Heidi Phillpot from Quill Fine Art Creations for a fun, beginner-friendly brush lettering workshop for ages 5+, presented as part of the Museum of the Riverina’s Rare Trades Weekend | Spring Session.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of brush calligraphy and how to use this skill creatively.

Through guided practice and exercises, you’ll learn the basics of hand lettering, from key strokes and forming letters through to creating words and phrases.

You’ll finish the workshop by putting your new skills into practice and creating your own fun piece of hand-lettered artwork.

THREE PERSPECTIVES. ONE CONVERSATION. ❄️

What happens when an industrial chemist, a Southern Ocean researcher and an artist come together to talk about Antarctica?

That's the idea behind Antarctica and the Southern Ocean: Perspectives in Art and Science.

Hear from:

🧪 Jorg Metz, industrial chemist, curator and former Laboratory Manager at Casey Station, Antarctica

🔬 Dierdre Hanrahan-Tan, PhD candidate researching the Southern Ocean

🎨 Peter McLeish, artist exploring Antarctica, climate change and red sprite atmospheric disturbances

Each speaker will present a 15-minute talk before joining a 45-minute panel discussion and audience Q&A.

Presented as part of ICE PACT, the event will explore the connections between art, science and personal experience — and what these perspectives can tell us about protecting Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

MEET THE SPEAKER | Rebecca Jones

What can a war memorial tell us about the people who created it and the people who continue to remember through it?

Our guest speaker Rebecca Jones, Collections Officer at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney, has extensive experience working across the museum sector, including with regional museums throughout NSW.

At our upcoming guest lecture, Rebecca will draw on her experience and the Anzac Memorial’s collections to explore how Australians commemorate military service, the stories held within war memorials, and the important role museums play in preserving our military history.

She’ll take us from the Sphinx Memorial in Sydney’s Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to Wagga Wagga’s Victory Memorial Gardens, before discussing the importance of preserving nationally significant ANZAC objects within regional collections, where they can remain connected to the communities and stories they represent.

Join Rebecca for a fascinating morning of stories, history and discussion.

MEET THE ARTISAN: HEIDI PHILLPOT ✒️

This spring’s Rare Trades Weekend is welcoming Heidi Phillpot, the Wagga-based artist behind Quill Fine Art Creations.

Heidi has been running her design studio since 2015. Trained as a graphic designer, she combines her love of old-world aesthetics, traditional printmaking, calligraphy and illustration to create refined contemporary design work.

Heidi’s love of art began in childhood, when she discovered quilling and spent hours drawing, painting and experimenting with paper. Encouraged by her mother, she developed a strong foundation in fine art before going on to formal design training.
Today, Heidi brings those creative roots together with her professional design experience, creating meaningful, modern pieces for her clients.

This October, Heidi will be sharing her skills at the Museum of the Riverina through calligraphy workshops, demonstrations and a pop-up personalised calligraphy shop.

Come along and check out "In Good Company: 100 Years of Calvary Riverina Hospital".

This fascinating story, showcases stories, objects and photographs which trace the last hundred years of Calvary, from its earliest beginnings through to today, and into the future.

RARE TRADES WEEKEND: CALLIGRAPHY WITH QUILL FINE ART CREATIONS ✒️

This spring, discover the beauty of calligraphy and design at the Museum of the Riverina’s Rare Trades Weekend | Spring Session.

Join Wagga-based calligrapher and letterpress artisan Heidi Phillpot from Quill Fine Art Creations for a weekend celebrating the art and craft of beautiful lettering.

Across the weekend, you can take part in beginner-friendly workshops, watch Heidi demonstrate her craft, have a go at calligraphy yourself, and browse a pop-up shop featuring personalised calligraphy and letterpress products.

REMEMBERING THE ANZACS | War Memorials, Museums and What We Preserve

How do we remember the ANZACs? What do war memorials symbolise, and what role do museums play in sharing the stories of those who served their country?

These questions are at the heart of our upcoming guest lecture with Rebecca Jones, Collections Officer at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney, and a veteran of the museum sector.

Rebecca will explore how we memorialise and remember, and why museums are so important in preserving and sharing the stories of those who served.

She will also discuss a nationally significant ANZAC object that was recently donated to the Museum of the Riverina, the Kangaroo March Banner, and why it is critical objects like this are preserved in their home communities.

One of the wonderful artefacts to be found in our upcoming exhibition "In Good Company" is this antique theodolite, brought into us by Phil Davis, the grandson of Snow Davis.

This theodolite belonged to Herbert Pettigrew "Snow" Davis, who joined the iconic firm of Wagga builders, Charles Hardy & Co., in 1922. Born at Bowen, Queensland in 1897, Snow was a builder and civil engineer by trade, who specialised in bridge building.

In 1941, he took on the role of Managing Director for Hardy's, and was later Chairman of directors for many years. He used this theodolite to mark out the foundations of Calvary Hospital, and also the Wagga Airport!

Snow died at Wagga Wagga in May 1967, aged 70 years.

"In Good Company" opens on Saturday 29 August 2026 at our Historic Council Chambers site and runs until Sunday 22 November 2026.

What does it take to spend a summer working in Antarctica?

Jorg Metz is an industrial chemist, curator and former Laboratory Manager at Casey Station, Antarctica, where he worked during the summer of 2011/12.

Jorg's firsthand experience on the ice became the inspiration for ICE PACT, our upcoming exhibition bringing together more than 30 works exploring Antarctica, the Antarctic Treaty System and the importance of protecting the Southern Ocean.

At Antarctica and the Southern Ocean: Perspectives in Art and Science, Jorg will share his personal experiences and insights before joining our other speakers for a panel discussion and audience Q&A.
