Wangaratta Art Gallery presents a relevant, diverse and changing visual arts program, consisting of national, state and regional exhibitions; including local artists, touring exhibitions and joint ventures with the public galleries sector in Victoria. Over 30 exhibitions are held each year across 3 spaces: the main Gallery space, The Workshop Space, and also in the Foyer Galleries at Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre.

LAST CHANCE to see Petite Miniature Textiles 2026 before it closes on 13 September. Petite is a biennial exhibition showcasing innovative small-scale textile practice from across Australia. This captivating exhibition celebrates the creativity, skill and diversity of contemporary textile artists.

This year’s curator, artist Cara Johnson chose the 46 works by 34 artists and groups from a highly competitive field of over 280 entries, which respond to the theme of “in the detail’:

'The theme ‘in the detail’ can been understood and explored in many ways, from deep observation, material centred process and endless conceptual threads, but for me it is about taking care of every element of the work from thought, to making, to resolution. The selected artists responded to this idea in beautiful and innovative ways, demonstrating how smaller works can hold great power, and encourage us to take notice.' Cara Johnson

NOW OPEN Sunshine and Shadows 🌗

Sunshine and Shadows, a new exhibition of collage works by Albury-based artist Donna Caffrey, is now open in the WPACC Foyer Gallery.

In Sunshine and Shadows, Donna tells the story of the Golden Sun Moth and the Bogong Moth, endangered subjects that symbolise each other’s mirror-inverse: while the Golden Sun Moth is only active during the brightest hours of the day, the Bogong Moth is nocturnal. Despite this distinction, both insects are deeply significant to local biodiversity. Donna illuminates their plight in a series of equally playful and profound vignettes.

Sunshine and Shadows will be on display until Wednesday 25 November.

WORKSHOP The Art of Henna 🪔🖌️

Discover the beautiful art of henna with Komal from Akshar Henna Art. Henna (also known as mehndi) is a traditional form of temporary body art that has been practised for centuries across South Asia, the Middle East and other regions. Natural henna paste is applied to the skin to create decorative patterns and designs, which gradually develop into a reddish-brown stain. Henna is commonly associated with celebrations, weddings, festivals and other special occasions and is also a beautiful form of artistic and cultural expression.

ARTIST TALK Moorina Bonini + Monica Rani Rudhar

Hear from Yorta Yorta, Wurundjeri and Wiradjuri artist Moorina Bonini and Sydney-based artist Monica Rani Rudhar speak to their moving work in Tannic Bonds.

Moorina Bonini’s Bitja (Fire) is a video installation representing the cultural burning of a river red gum as a revitalising practice.

Monica Rani Rudhar’s work in Tannic Bonds explores themes of cultural disconnection and ancestral guidance. Using photography, video and performance, she imagines herself as her mother’s childhood cow. The work features purree (Indian Yellow) pigment, which was historically derived from cows fed mango leaves, linking Hindu sacredness to personal family mythologies.

Following Moorina and Monica’s talk, stay for the official launch of Tannic Bonds and Keeping Time, a solo exhibition by Echuca-based artist Ellen Lee capturing her impressions of the Banyula State Forest, from 4.30pm. Guests will also hear from Tannic Bonds curators Megan Fizell and Olivia Welch during the evening. All are welcome.

OPENING Tannic Bonds 🥭🍵 & Keeping Time ⏳🍂

Join us to celebrate the opening of two exciting new exhibitions Tannic Bonds and Keeping Time, a solo exhibition by Echuca-based artist Ellen Lee.

Hear from Yorta Yorta, Wurundjeri and Wiradjuri artist Moorina Bonini and Sydney based artist Monica Rani Rudhar speak to their moving work in Tannic Bonds at 4pm before the official launch of both exhibitions from 4.30pm.

Curated by Dr Megan R. Fizell and Olivia Welch, Tannic Bonds draws together artists from a range of disciplines to explore the cultural and ancestral connections evoked by tannins – organic compounds found in fruit, seeds, roots, and bark. Just like family, home, community, and custom, tannins leave their mark: they have a bitter taste and vivid pigment, making them universally applicable food for thought.

Ellen Lee’s Keeping Time is a collection of large-scale works on paper capturing the artist’s observations of Banyula State Forest. Ellen traces the shifting light, seasonal rhythms, and ecological changes occurring in the site through watercolour, graphite, and natural matter such as leaf tannins and rust residue, prompting us to rethink our relationship to place.

NEW ACQUISITION 🐛🪡✨

We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of Caterpillar, a deeply profound work of hand-embroidery and beading incorporating a variety of reclaimed fabrics, created by acclaimed South Australian textile artist Kasia Töns.

Caterpillar is a material mapping of personal and collective transformation, inspired by Töns’s research into famed heroines of history such as Ada Blackjack and Julia Butterfly Hill. Caterpillar is a natural inclusion for Wangaratta Art Gallery’s permanent collection, reflecting the township’s historic presence in textile manufacturing.

In addition to featuring in numerous exhibitions and undertaking residencies across Australia and internationally, Töns has appeared in the 2017, 2019, and 2021 iterations of the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award, signifying a close ongoing connection to our community.

Caterpillar was originally produced for Töns’s The Mage, a 2025 solo exhibition at MARS Gallery. We are delighted to give our visitors the opportunity to witness the magnetism of Caterpillar first-hand in the second iteration of the exhibition coming to Wangaratta Art Gallery in 2027.

Keeping Time is a series of large-scale works on paper by Echuca based artist Ellen Lee, shaped by sustained observation of Banyula State Forest. Working with watercolour, graphite and natural pigments, Lee traces shifting light, seasonal rhythms, birdlife and subtle environmental change. A restrained palette of organic hues is layered with stains and residues gathered from the landscape, including leaf tannins, rust and other found matter, each carrying its own history. Gestural graphite marks, drawn from blind contour studies, build surfaces that register time, transition and repeated looking.

Keeping Time is on now until 18 October 2026.

Tannic Bonds explores material connections between the seeping stains of tannic substances and the enduring bonds of intergenerational stories and practices that mark the land, the body, and memory. Tannins, found in leaves, roots, bark, fruits, and seeds, assert their presence; they carry a strong, bitter taste and are known for their ability to colour and stain, penetrating materials with a saturated dye.
Curated by Megan R. Fizell and Olivia Welch Tannic Bonds bring together work by eight contemporary artists whose work is informed by the material explorations of tannins including Moorina Bonini, d harding, Kirtika Kain, Shivanjani Lal, Monica Rani Rudhar, Cameron Robbins, Abdullah M.I. Syed, and Jayanto Tan.
